Meet Up at Historicon?
« on: May 24, 2007, 12:47:24 PM »
Greetings Pulpers and Pulpettes,

Mark here. Long time lurker, first time poster. I was wondering if there would be an interest in scheduling a time for folks attending Historicon to get together for an hour or so just to say hi and discuss The Hobby. I know that there will be a large Rattrap Productions contingent in attendance and it might be a good opportunity for folks to chat about their current projects and wish-lists, compare notes about various publishers and house rules, and generally bemoan the seeming second class citizen status the Pulp Gamer  apparently enjoys in the broader community these days.

If you're going to make it to the Con and are interested please let us know.

Thanks!

There's much more to Lead Adventure than Pulp, you know.

Pulper, indeed. Never been so insulted!  :)

Getting back to the topic, it sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately I won't be there, myself. Oh well.

Poly, I am abashed. Of course the pow-wow is intended for and open to all the fine members of the Miniatures Adventure Hobby and related fields of endeavor. No slight intended.

Very sorry to hear that you won’t be over for the Con.

We've all ready your battle reports Poly, you can cloak them in the legitimacy of historical gaming, but they are SO pulp.  :D

Well, I did do that "Mighty Joe Kong" thing, but that was a one-off.

As to the rest, I prefer to think of it as "Boy's Own," which is a British phenomenon that is kind of like, and kind of not like Pulp. It's a grey area I suppose. I think Pulp is in its essence a very American thing, though it does have parallels in Britain. Can we really call anything British "Pulp?"

Oh, I don't know. We're back to that old "What is Pulp?" chestnut again.

MAkes  me wonder to which school of adventure gaming us Swedes arer steeped in. Id have to say we're somewhere in between Tintin and The Phantom if that makes any sense at all. But, alas, nothing home grown...

...I talk a lot of shit! I forgot Vikings! :-)

What, would you call Njal's Saga pulp? I suppose so. If you count John Grisham as Pulp, which it ressembles, what  with all that Icelandic obsession with litigation. Come to think of it, Ally McBeal would have been much better had it followed that model and contained the violence along with all the courtroom drama.

Violent attack - Court Case - Another violent attack - Another Court Case

(Repeat until you have enough to fill a Penguin Classics book or a whole TV season. Or all the characters are dead.)

To answer Illumisar's original question, I'll be at Historicon and I look forward to meeting any of you I don't already know.  Those of you I *do* already know, well, I suppose I can't really avoid it...

Thanks to Rich, I'm running a 45A game Saturday night - my first con game ever.  I expect to be a bit of a wreck.

Excerpt from Ally's Saga, verse CXXXI out of 900 pretty much identical chapters:
"Ally was that winter in Vinland York. One day to the ring of judges she strode and spoke on behalf of Firga, maiden of Eyjafirth and her catty co-worker and rival to the homested Hrutfirth of Hruth the Fair, gorgeous also coworker, who, that is Firga, had slain an man in wroth with an axe on the side of Northwaterdale. Ally recited:
'Better to die by maiden-slung axe but to perish by pox in the haybed of home.'
Firga was aquitted. Next spring Ally sailed for Upsala."

Anyway, I'm digressing. My point was that yankees have Pulp, and limeys "Boy's own" us northerners could claim our intro to the realm of adventure is "The Longships" and, yes, "Nial's saga".

Pretty much every period involving the Brits from the Norman Conquest through WW1 could be called British Colonials right? lol

Currently I plan on being there from Thursday night on to Sunday morn!

I'd be glad to get together to talk for an hour or so over a beer or whatever libation you choose.

Heck I actually owe, and plan to deliver, on a few beers to some folks from a different forum.

It might be fun to setup an after hours Pulp/Boy's Own Lead Adventure Forum invitational game. Agree on a set of rules, although I think it should be T&T, everyone bring a hero/heroine and a 10 man squad and a piece of terrain.

Could be the start of something big!

I will be there running a couple of sessions of my Safari game. My group will also be running French Foreign Legion and a Pulp game if I am not mistaken. The Yahoo Colonial list used to make stickers for badges to point out members, perhaps those from the forums might do that to make everyone easier to spot.
