Goblins! Goblins! Goblins!
« on: 18 March 2010, 08:46:16 PM »
Hi guys, I am currently starting up a Goblin warband and I'm looking for miniatures that are a bit 'out-of-the-ordinary'. I'm going for an Alan Lee/Brian Froud sort of feel rather than the GW 'kwerazzzzzzzzy Gobbo' thing. I'm hoping to eventually have a Goblin City Militia (mounted Goblins, cannons, armoured Goblins) based loosely on the fellas featured in the 80's film 'Labyrinth'. Anyone got any ideas?  :D

Gnoblars from the Warhammer Ogre Kingdoms line. They were designed by the same guy who designed the gobbos from that wonderous movie.
Cheap too, you get a bunch in one box. Hit the secondary market also as many Ogre players do not use the them.
These are also a good start for conversions.
The old Clan War Goblin Horde guys might work also as they are standing on each other.

Trouble with those is that they look even more daft that the GW goblins. Maybe it's their more human faces but they all just look bewildered rather than menacing, hateful creatures. I'd feel bad slaughtering those little guys.

I saw a similar thread to this somewhere else - Frothers I think... will investigate - I remember there were some really great minis!

Ones based on the Labyrinth???

Alternative armies. Easily. Just LOOK at the knights!

If you email them, I think there are more poses. Including mounted ones...

Brian Froud, excellent choice.  :)

Andy from Heresy is sculpting the best goblins I've ever seen, but they seem to keep running into snags w/ casting and such. RedBox has some sweet ones, but they have disappeared from the site!

Conspiracy? Too close to actual gobbos, so the real-thing are messing w/ the minis?

Can I suggest you take a look at the Vendel Miniatures Goblins, a nice if overlooked range.
They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious!!

For what you want the Alternative armies goblins are just the ticket so I second rob_alderman.

If you look at the role play line of goblins there are some mounted ones too, on dodos which is close but you could always pick up the old Harlequin mounted goblins from Black tree and swap mounts for something even closer.

Well, as I said, email them.

They will always be happy to provide unpainted versions at the price of unpainted minis. Just talk over the idea and they'll sort something out for you!

Just found this splendid fellow on Fleabay which might suit the bill, very Froudian if you ask me.

Also check out Freebooter miniatures, particularly the 'Goblin Duel'.

If you can find any of it the old Rackham stuff is along the right lines especially the Mid Nor Dwarf and Goblin stuff plus they did some specific 'Chess' themed minis, there's a big sentient tower with goblins clambering over it that is perfect for what you have in mind.

Yeah, that's good too.

Almost down to the paintjob, use of muted colours rather than bright vibrant ones.

Froudian, lol;D

From otherworld

I quite like these, but they make me think of a gang of Nobby Nobbs (from the Discworld books), rather than a menacing goblin hoard  :?

I agree with Trooper - the Vendel ones are a very nice change from the usual OTT Warhammer style goblin.

I love their Dwarves too and they are not too different in size and build from the Lord Of The Rings versions.

Yeah. I'd say the Vendel ones are good 'serious' ones.

Personally, I find them too 'human' though, not menacing or anything. GW's are just silly, but I think AA's are a nice medium...  :)
