So, I've been trying to sculpt lately
« on: March 22, 2010, 06:26:16 AM »
Hey,
For my sixth sculpt ever i thought I'd try something a bit different.
A crocodile gangster to be exact.

so, here he is

He turned out pretty much as planned, except his head, which looks more gecko than crocodile to me.
I figured, if anywhere, he could be used in AC57, if i ever take up the period that is.

Any comments or criticism wold be appreciated.

Cheers, Sam

I've never even tried to sculpt, I just imagine it to be very difficult, so please take my comments as constructive criticism.  :)

First off is the pose, or the lack of it. A little more animation would be good as even standing still limbs show some bend to them. Secondly the jacket looks to be part of the figure rather than worn by the figure, there needs to be some sense of depth of clothing. Lastly the head appears to be too forward, unless that's what you wanted.

As it's only your sixth sculpt, you should be pleased with the result. I understand it takes quite a few to get it right and some people never do, I don't think you'll be with the 'dont's'.  :)

I like the concept. The idea is pretty original and creative. Although this figure isn't the best I have seen, it looks better than some of the stuff that is being offered for sale. Keep it up kid. You can only keep getting better and you show a lot of potential. If this figure was in a line of related figures I would probably pick it up.

I like the idea of a gecko gangster. If you gave him a mobile phone instead of a gun you could call him Gordon Gecko. (Ancient Wall St reference)

The sculpt reminds of some of the Minifigs 80's fantasy figures so that's not a bad start. I'd be creasing the arms to provide a bit more "flex" or tension in the figure. The whole body could also tilt forward a bit with the legs a bit better braced for the recoil of the gun.

It's a good early effort. Don't give up. My first attempt at moulding was surfboard resin in a styrofoam cup. After it stopped foaming like a beast, I stuck coloured pins in it for multiple eyes. Believe it or not it looked good. I can't do accurate Seven Years War Saxons but I do a great amorphous monster.

Keep going!

Very nice, whilst it is an early sculpt it evokes a feeling I like, and sometimes the best sculptor does a good figure but it has no 'mood' your figure has this 'mood'.Get it cast,I'll buy one, send it to you painted (I'm in Australia).

Cheers guys,

I definitely agree with the points made, the problem is just translating that into the mini.
I'll keep going at it and I'm looking into resin casting and hopefully should have some results soon.

Thanks all!
Sam
