How do you like your Weird WW2?
« on: 25 March 2010, 02:36:13 PM »
A few years back, this genre was pretty well hidden from us gamers...and quite pleasingly, it's become a much more popular topic.

Now there are differing universes within the field, how do you take yours?

Some prefer the superscience and giant walkers, some the more occult.  Some insinuate the War never ended....etc. etc.

While I love the variety in models and material available (and have spent my money on both!), my 'ideal' WWW II is on a more limited basis.

I like the idea of the real events of WW 2, but with just a smidge of 'weirdness' in it.  Just enough that it keeps the rumors of the Weirdness alive, but not enough to completely alter history.

I prefer the 'secret war' approach, I guess.  Where just a few in the know have delved into occult and mysticism.  A huge majority of soldiers, officers and leaders are blissfully unaware of this secret war, other than hard to swallow rumors.

Weapon wise, I prefer to think the large majority of the weapons are realistic and fit to the period...

Anyhow, just curious to know what others thought when they enter the world of WWW 2?

I am more of the "Superscience" ilk. Depending on my current mood, I variously prefer the "paper panzer" and "panzer mecha" varieties, and if I'm feeling particularly adventurous, add death rays and flying saucers.

I'm not too fond of the "mystery" variant, although I really liked the "Kishin Heidan" take on it (parasitic aliens striking used by ruthless Nazis). I really like the werewolf and zombie models put out by West Wind, but given a choice, I'd always prefer mechs, tanks and powered armours.

SOTR does kind of do it for me. Into my super science and arcane lore, (Return to Castle Wolfenstein set those gears in motion years ago), not too fantastical though and a sucker for a good mech and shambling reich's corpse! :D

I'm more inclined to the super science/alternate history scenarios.  An alternate world where something happened to extend WWII into 1946 and beyond.  Or some weird scientific advance (walkers, death rays, etc)  changed the course of the war.  I don't mind a bit of the Hellboy occult stuff, but not as the main focus.

I am just getting into the SOTR setting.Starting to collect a Soviet force.Had some more miniatures come this week from Maelstrom games. They just sent a new promotion code today too(typical).Tempted to order some German Werewolves and Wolf Runners.

I like the Occult/horror types in the Weird War settings. The Mech stuff is pretty cool too.

Looking forward to seeing more releases from West Wind.

Yeah, my first real exposure to Weird War was definately Return to Castle Wolfenstien.  Pretty much set the bar for me as well.  I enjoyed the 'normal' levels, and then they were just accentuated by the weird ones...

Just now playing through WOLFENSTIEN on the XBOX 360.  While I really like some of the ideas  (Love the references to the orders, such as the GOLDEN DAWN) the 'other dimension' and Black sun stuff are good...>The game itself is a bit....I dunno yawningly repetitive at times....

I like both super science and mystical, though not at the same time. With many of the typical WWW2 subjects I can usually think of good reasons for them occuring in either setting though - zombies are a good example, in mystical settings they might be animated by necromancy, while in super science they could be the result of an engineered virus.

I'm quite picky about my mechs, I don't like most bipedal or quadrupedal mechs (particulalry those with long legs) as I don't see them being very practical ('Empire Strikes Back Snowspeeder Syndrome'). I'm ok with many-legged tank-mechs with a squat stance though (http://www.mondospider.com/index.php). I'm also ok with power armour though I prefer it to be of the 'Ripley's Alien Lifter' variety where the pilots arms and legs go into the limbs of the machine (rather than the pilot just being in the head of a large mech, for example) - I also prefer them to carry a large weapon in a normal way rather than shoulder mounted or underslung forearm mounted weapons - old school iron sight aiming for me!

I'm also a fan of full blown, as in SoTR. Zombies, monsters, super soldiers, advanced tech, walkers, it's all good.

Pretty much everything.  Hellboy meets, Indiana Jones and King Kong would be my way of describing it.  Most of the time I like doing CoC style games in which Heroic archeologists struggled with SS Ahnenerbe agents intent on releasing the Nameless Ones / Great Old Ones / Ogdru Jahad on the Allies.

I'ma man of gentler taste, more like wWWII, if you catch my drift. What if scenarios, modest, not balance tipping occultism, just one step removed super technology.

I myself was also introduced to this genre by Return to Castle Wolfenstein, probably my favourite game. Anyway I am now slowly building a soviet force for Secrets of the Third Reich though instead of zombies I plan to use skeletons for a more Wolfenstein feel.. ;)

Like Hammers, I like my Weird World War II… light… (if I understand his post correctly)

I mean still "plausible" in some ways but with some occult aspects added. I also like secret weapons (weapons of secret contraption) but mainly as scenic elements and/or games objectives. I could add some zombies (or ghosts) in a game but only for the "bad" side… I really don’t like werewolf, patch-up super soldiers (like Frankenstein’s monsters) or walkers…

I like that all the basic troops have historically accurate personal weapons (rifles, SMG, HMG, grenades, etc.) The heroes (from either side) could have special attributes and/or be protected by some kind of magic elements (then again only something "basic").

I like extreme environments (Artic, Antarctic, jungles), hidden bases, dark castles kind of settings…

Basically so, I like my WWWII to be like the opening sequence of Hellboy (the first movie). Special services units with 1 or 2 occult specialists added… Ordinary men facing extraordinary situations
