Dr Who Minis - Where to buy?
« on: 10 April 2010, 05:11:08 AM »
I'm looking for a couple of Dr Who minis in 28mm and I'm wondering what the best sources are?

I've been referred to Blacktree, but frankly a great deal of the sculpts are lacklustre.

As you can see to the left, I'm in Australia, so I'd ideally like a local stockist or a British one; postage from America is a killer.

Also I'd prefer figures I can just buy off the rank, no ebay auctions or oop figures going out the back of someone's van.

I'm after mainly the 7th Doctor (McCoy) and Ace if that's any help.

Then I think you're pretty much stuck with Black Tree (originally Harlequin).  The only other licensed lines that have been produced were from Fine Art Castings, which came out before the days of the 7th Doctor, and from Character Options (the DW Micro-Universe plastics), which were for 11th (and some 10th) Doctor.  There are some look-alikes around, but, again, they are 21st century Who.
Back from the dead, almost.

Outside of this, Heresy miniatures also have a sci fi travellers in time and space ( looking uncannily similar to doctors 9, 10 & 11) and Fenris games have a nice looking gaswegian telephone box you might want to consider.

Whoops!  I forgot the Alector/Behind the Sofa 35mm-ish ones.  Don't think they did a 7th Doctor or Ace though.

I mostly use the BTD ones, learned to live with the 1 to 2 months delivery time

You also might want to scour eBay for the old FASA sets perhaps

Alias Citadel, another one I forgot (but again dating from the 5th Doctor era).  Where is my memory this morning?

Does this mean some "vintage" remarkably-similar-to-but-obviously-not Who figures could be in the pipeline?

Hat Guy - have you joined the "Dr Who Minis Game" YahooGroup? There has been a lot of discussion on using proxy figures and conversions there.

All of this is going to have to be put on the back-burner I'm afraid, the bill for my car service just came in.  :?

But while we're at it, what do people recommend for a John Simm Master?

Heresy's "Dr Masterson" for The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords.

I've been considering Hasslefree's "Baker" or "Kev" for The End of Time.

If you're after Alector/behind the sofa ones, email Alternative Armies, they still have some painted stock I believe...  :)
