Mexican troops for ACW2 New Pictures
« on: April 10, 2010, 04:55:24 PM »
My plan is to do a Trotsky led Fourth International cadre made up of Mexican soldiers working its way up into California and forming an army of disgruntled field and labor workers as it moves farther North.

Pictures on the web seem hard to come by. I need a good figure for the Mexican troops. After looking around and doing some reading I've narrowed the hunt down a bit and am looking for suggestions.

Pulp Figures German Seebatallion look the part

As do Copplestones Chinese

The Musketeer Minis RIC might work but as was earlier pointed out they are carrying what are obviously Enfields which might require some 'splainin' if it ever got out.

II've got a suitable Diego Rivera but I'm also on the look out for a Frida Kahlo figure

Now THAT is an inspired idea. :)

I think Dixon Miniatures have some suitable senoritas which could be fridafied with strongly accentuated eyebrows...

That's a great idea.

Of course W.R. Hearst sort of took the revolution personally, what with the confiscations of his property and such, so I can imagine how he'd react to the marxists marching north to get him. I'd love to see a battle of Hearst Castle.

While the stalinist like army purges of the 20's did quite a number on Mexican cavalry, they still had several thousand mounted troops going into the 30's, perhaps Old Glory might have something in their Pershing in Mexico line? I've never seen any of them, but the line seems to get solid reviews.

A very inspired idea, Skrap:)

I rarely if ever recommend Old Glory figs (though their ancillary lines are quite nice). However, in this case, I have seen their Pancho Villa line, and it's actually good. The Federales look the part. Those might be a good source for your Mexican troopers, assuming they haven't overcast them and they aren't covered with flash, they were quite lovely when I saw them at Historicon a few years ago.

Sorry, I feel I need to correct you: eyebrow, singular, right across the forehead:

Anyway, an appealing idea.

You know, three different people have requested that we do a Frida Kalo figure in the "Champions of History" range... odd.

Yeah well Frida and old Diego might be the fifth column within a Trotskyite Mexican army, they embraced Stalin suspiciously quickly after old Leon had his mountaineering accident. Still any chance to play old Strangler's songs and produce a 6 foot ( scale) mural running along one side of the gaming table should always be grasped.

Personally I think it wouldn't be a period Mexican Pulp Army without Lupe Velez, the Mexican Spitfire. At some point you can announce that one of the leaders of the Mexican faction has drowned in her toilet after a failed romance with Johnny Weismuller (Tarzan). Would make for a fun campaign newsletter.

Old Glory's Federales are really nice. I had a chance to play with some of them recently. I have some okay pics of the ones in the game here -

Yeah, I was one I think, I'm certain I requested a Frida Kahlo somewhere. Not all women made of lead have to be pretty. Plenty of the guys aren't. And I hardly ever see figures in wheelchairs.

I wanted a Natalya Trotsky as well, I seem to remember, because I wanted to stage the first assassination attempt on Trotsky, when some would-be assassins (complete with ridiculous disguises) broke into his house with machine guns and tore the place up, shouting a lot. Frida and Diego Rivera weren't there, but David Siqueiros was (in a pickelhaube, I believe).

Skrap; sounds like a barmy old project, well done that man! A Trotskyist column attacking America... brilliant. I a3wait with much agogity.

I suspect that a search of The Simpsons merchandising might provide a suitable alternative:

Oh, I didn't object to it. Seemed an odd request, that's all, given that most of our characters are more prominent adventurers/scientists/etc.  Frida would certainly be an interesting model to sculpt/carry.

I think the Trotskyite idea is good, but that might provide some (interesting) complications, given that he and Stalin were blood enemies by this point!

Well, exactly. The communists/socialists need different factions to fight each other too, can't let the right have all the fun.

Right now it looks like we have more Communist players than anything else. California, go figure. lol

As for my Mexican troops I took the third and not shown road and ordered some of the Empress SCW Republican Assault troops.

They have a much less "Regular" look to them with some in shirtsleeves. I think they'll work out well.

Lacking figures to paint I turned to vehicles yesterday and started blocking out a Marmon Herrington  CTVL tankette.

If anyone has or knows of any pictures of the back deck I'd be most appreciative.

You know, I had no idea that Marmon-Herrington was based in my home town of Indianapolis. Fascinating stuff.

Neat looking little tank. Will have to get that added to the line)
