Both excellent entries.  In the end it was the mad eyes on the Dragoons' horses which swung me in favour of the Gypsies.

Ah, you see, I thought Poli said that I stood a chance of winning which I do not see. Never mind, lets drop it. It is no skin off my nose.

Cripes. I'm sorry I said anything about the eyes, Cap'n. It seems to have become de rigeur (cf. Thargor)  ;)

Maybe I should make some remark about frenzied Parliamentarians in general?

Who cares who wins anyway? I just admire the painting and I regret my arrant cowardice at not entering the comp. Go Greywolf! (he's a pal after all.)

Not to worry, Starkers - I'm used to it. It's surprising how many people take the trouble to point out that they REALLY DON'T LIKE THE WAY I PAINT HORSES' EYES.

Naturally, I shall continue to do them that way because I think they look good. Also because the complainants never have the temerity to show how THEY paint horses eyes that looks any better than my way  ;)

A lot of people who claim to know about horses persist in this myth that you don't see the white in a horses eyes unless they are reall really really stressed and frightened. Well that's not my experience. If I drive my car - even quite slowly - past a string of horses in a narrow country lane, you see the big dumb things rolling their eyes soon enough. I'd also point out that the horses I paint are supposed to depict men and horses in battle - in which case they would certainly be stressed and frightened, and you would see the white of their eyes, n'est ce pas?

But really quite extraordinary how many people seem to feel so storngly about this...  ::)

Honestly, no I don't. Very big, very stupid, very highly strung, and very powerful. A bad combination.
I lived with a girl for several years who owned horses, so I got a lot of exposure to them and feel I know them quite well. And I'm not a horse lover as a result.
There again (shock horror!) I don't like cats either - unlike most LAFers apparently.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as in all things. (As long as it's not a crazily staring eye... )

Now dogs - dogs I love and adore beyond reason...  :)

I concur.

Dogs:
* don't care what time you come home, came home or are coming home (and don't expect a call) :? Even better, they get more excited, the later you are home.
* don't care of whom, what or where you smell of  ::)
* A dog's parents never visit.
* A dog's time in the bathroom is confined to a quick drink
* don't mind that you spend sooo many evenings on LAF entries  ;)

'Man's Best Friend', indeed... :)

I understand
I used to like dogs but had some bad experiences and it took me a long time not to look after a stick or a stone when I see a stray dog anymore.
Without being a horse lover (as opposed to being a cat lover  ;)) I must say that I made very good experiences with horses, maybe because the people who kept them were especially careful to keep them in an adequate and natural manner. Same with misbehaving dogs, the owners are always to blame.
Not wanting to convert You  ;) though, You don't like horses - well, that's it  :)

But stupid and highly strung? no, not my experience, on the contrary

Nay.

Great entries and a realy difficult choice.  Aside from voting for myself, I'll generally favour anything with boobs, buttocks or dogs in it.  On this occasion though, for me it came down to a choice between Hammers tablecloth and the Cap'ns breastplate. Both stunning.

'Hello Emergency, what service do require?'

'Whinny'

'I'm sorry could you repeat that?'

'Neighhhhhhhhhhhhh.'

I see, an ambulance and possibly a large sugar cube.
