The minis themselves are very nice - I've had my eye on the Pig Iron models for a while, and after seeing your work on these, I'll have two eyes on them!

No, he uses black - and let it shine through for deep shadows.

But I think he uses paints with more pigment than GW paints contain, though  ;)

I think the richness comes from using contrasting layers (I don't know if you can call it that?) - you have the very dark recesses, then the - fairly dull - middle colour, and then the boldly applied much lighter layer. Makes the colour stand out
