Riding the first train
« on: 14 May 2010, 12:51:57 PM »
I was lucky to get one of the rare tickets for a ride on Germany´s first train for this years anniversary. The engine had been built in Newcstle by Stephenson, disassembled and shipped to Rotterdam, from there to Cologne on the river Rhine and carried from there to Nuremberg by mules, where it was reassembled at Wilhelm Späth mechanic works. The first train left Nuremberg on december, 7th in 1835. The current locomotive is a refurbished replica from 1935 that was severely damaged in a roundhouse fire in 2003. I´m glad that it is reanimated now.

Well, ladies and gents, this is what travelling was like in the middle of the 19th century:

That was real fun!
