Empire Knights update 28/06/10
« on: June 09, 2010, 01:32:05 PM »
Having seen captain bloods earl of surrey I was inspired to have a crack at an armoured figure and this is how it came out.

I am quite pleased with it but my neatness is still an issue, I just can't seem to focus on that last little bit of detail without my eyes going  o_o,

hope you like them, any comments or help always appreciated

now where did I put those chinese red spears...

Looks good to me.  :) Purple feathers are always a good choice.

Like it. The purple and green go together well, (Wimbledon tennis colours  :)). I struggle with metallics a little myself. Haven't yet got them nailed down the way I feel I have with some other areas of painting.

I am quite pleased with it but my neatness is still an issue, I just can't seem to focus on that last little bit of detail without my eyes going  o_o,

Have you got one of those optivisor things or something similar like a magnifier that clamps to the table? I was a bit sniffy about them to start with but have recently got one that goes on me head. As it doesn't actually make your hand any steadier I was a little worried to begin with that all it would do would be to give me a wonderful grandstand view of all the mistakes I make. But I've got used to it now and I'm thinking I should have bought one years ago. It has made so much difference as far as neatness and fine detail goes, just in the week or so I have had it. I can't recommend it strongly enough.

Also, now I just need to get myself some kind of a jumpsuit and I can go to fancy dress parties as Cyclops out of the X-Men.  :)

Reason enough to buy one!  lol

Your knight hero looks very smart!  The gold details look great. 8)

Perhaps a little less paint on the brush when administering highlights on the horses barding? Personally I drybrush vallejo gun metal over black and then go over that with a little vallejo silver on the edges and raised parts. A very watered down black ink wash might help too to define the details a little more but be carful not to dull your nice shiny finish!  :D

Thanks guys

The pictures are bad I'll do some more another time.

Plynkes - I have often thought about an optivisor, and do have a magnifier but struggle to get some good results, I am actually finding that the older I get the further away the miniature needs to be.

Is the optivisor one big lens or like binoculars?

I will take your comments on board  :D :D

Hi Dodge,

Firstly, let me say your knight looks great. I've only just started looking into more metal colours myself on miniatures an also its good to read some nice suggestions from folks on the forum.

Don't be to hard on yourself about neatness. I think we can allow ourselves a little chaos in our painting, otherwise we would be still at the painting desk - I'm sure all would agree.

Keep up the great work,

Helen

Best wishes,
Helen

I like the knight (and he would fit right in with one of my units, which has purple feathers and do-dads).

Interesting about the optivisor.  I have been wondering if I should try something like that.  Ages ago I had one of those little stands with a magnifying class, where you clipped the figure to an arm and then looked at it through the magnifier while painting it - but not touching it.  I hated it - I need to hold the figure and twist it around (if I had been more patient with it, who knows?).  But the optivisor thingie might work.  Thanks for the suggestion, Mr. P., and the link, Helen.

A few new pics

the knight hero was painted by 3 colour layering, the rest were painted with just the lightest of the colurs I wanted and the army paintered in a combination of strong and dark tone,

I like them, hope you do C&C most welcome

cheers
