plague doctors?
« on: June 09, 2010, 04:27:37 PM »
Who said fantasy had to be lighthearted and fun?
Gimme dark and terrifying plague infested peasants and shit covered cobblestones any day.

And with that, I come to one of my favorite things to ever come out of Europe.

Plague doctors.
The good doctors originate from the 1300's, when the Black Death was sweeping the whole eastern side of the planet, killing a vast majority of humanity.
Doctors of the time noticed that scavenging birds such as crows and vultures didn't get sick, even when they fed on infected tissue.
They made the completely logical hypothesis that it was the way the birds looked that kept them from getting infected.
So they wore big plaster or cloth bird masks while visiting patients, and stuffed cloth inside the beak of the mask that was soaked in pleasant smelling perfumes in an attempt to stay healthy.
And it worked!

The world needs more stately bird masked gentlemen in it's fantasy gaming scenarios.
Any minis that you could suggest to me?

Here's a big one:

I'd love to see a 28mm one in Ratnik's Mordheim-looking range.

Well done, that's a nice miniature.

I just remembered I have this one which I like a lot, and could probably be converted.

There is  also this one: http://www.brother-vinni.com/gallery/28mm/m28plague.htm

He is avaliable unpainted for less then 10$.  But I`m not sure if he trades outside Russia.

He needs a hat, but that's a lovely figure.

Mirliton has this guy: http://www.mirliton.it/product_info.php?pName=juster-and-buffoons&cName=medieval-accessories but he'd probably need some serious converting, since he's a buffoon...

So maybe he won't need converting?  Well, except for a hat and cape.  And shoes, I guess.

What about Freebooter's assassin Apagado?  You'd need to slightly modify his mask, I think, but not too much.  His shop does frames and I'm dubious about linkage there, but look at freebooterminiatures.de , then click on the freebooter's fate link.  He's down in there, under assassins.  There's another that might need some modding, but he comes as part of a two pack with a bimbo assassin.  Not sure whether he's Coscritti or Harlequin, but he's one of that pair.

Edit: There's this guy from Smart Max, but ouch! the cost on him!  http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/miniatures/smart-max/smog/shaking-sean-1-35-scale.html

In their new Undead Fantasy range. Some nice witches and familiars in there as well.  :)

Wonderful stuff, like the rest of the Foundry undead range - the 17.60€/pack is quite another matter...  :-[
Currently painting: Black Hat Three Musketeers range.
