Border Reivers article
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:05:06 AM »
Anyone got a copy of the article in in Miniature Wargames # 126? A scan of the BR article would be great if you can.

Then I just need the new Warlord Games Scots Lancers for the mounted and I will be able to start some skirmish gaming. Won some PMC games buildings on the E-quicksand last night.
Cheers,

If you dont have it yet, Steel Bonnets by Fraeser is THE book to pick up on the subject :)

Yes, I think I will get that, I already have the 2 Ospreys.

As usual, great responses from the LAFers and lots of info.

Next question - any recommends for 25-28 mm stone wall fencing? I have a couple of buildings coming from pmc games but the bastle house from Grand Manner is a bit beyond my budget. Also waiting for the Warlord Games ECW Scots Lancers pack which includes 3 Moss troopers and 9 Lancers, should provide cav for both sides.

Interesting article. It could easily be used for an ECW or '45 Rebellion scenario. Maybe even Darkest Africa, with a little work.

I'm surprised no one has done a border reiver variant for the Pig Wars rules.

I recommend http://www.hirstarts.com/ for stone walls or building your own Bastle. The Scots Lancers look great, just got a box.

There used to be a Yahoo Group called The Steel Bonnets, that I actually co-founded. I am not sure that it is still active, but worth a look.
Thanks, now I am going to have to look at these Scottish lancers!!!

This thread has got the blood going a bit again, and I started thumbing through Fraser. One thing that I notice, is that by and large, the Reivers were mounted.  Looking at the ex Vendel figure sets, most have no more than a quarter of the figures on horseback.  What do you folks do to correctly model Reiver tactics?

I used to play Hot Trod and Red Hand for skrimish and that quite well abstracted the Hot trod aspect with a chart and drwaing cards etc which got around the need for both mounted and dismounted figures

For some extra colour, I can recommend George MacDonald Fraser's short story 'The Candlemass Road' (it's nothing like Flashman  ;))
