One of the reasons I switched to brush on varnish.

Aye! Whenever I sprayed Dullcoate on a model I felt like I just lost a year of my life.

I'm always scared to varnish models. Sometimes, I only varnish the areas people's hands will touch or rub off paint easily!!!

There is the brush-on version of Lord Nelson, too. I use it for single models, but for the big lots I prefer the spray can.

Hi

I dont matt any figures any more after the white colour( thick coat, bad batch, last 1/4 of pot or temperature) or the matt going yellow after 2 years( try for 30 years to find a good one ).
Try most matt's ( EVEN GW) and they do all have the same problem
best way, if you are matt varnishing you figures is to brush on very thin coats
never use the last 1/4 of the pot and allways give a good mix before using.
I only use GW spray satin, which i try to do in two light coats
Yes it satin but it goes flat after 6 months and never goes yellow.
Problem with sprays is
1 Follow the instruction on tin (Temperature below 5 Deg not good)
2 allways give a wee spray before spray your figures( just to check OK)
3 if too thick of coat, have thinner and brush on hand to save your painted figure
4 Spray outside (Pain if its raining and it rain a lot in Scotland)

Temperatrue *and* humidity can ruin a coat, I find. Winds doesn't help either so this really limits the scope for spraying outside.

Never been a problem for me unless it gales force 10 or too many beans, just make sure it blowing from behind you.

you have the same problem after a few drinks on the way home on a windy night

i have my figures on a old painting book, which make it easy to turning the figures 90 deg for each spray
and there is a great thing called a shed which can be great to spray in or leave you figures in to dry

which Rustins?

there's a few different types, and do you dilute with white spirit?
(so the same method as with Blackfriars?)

and since I stopped using Blackfiars I've been using D&R matt.

Just caught this thread...
I had a disaster recently where my SCW stuff tumbled around a bit in my figure case and needed touched up. That bit went well but when I gave them a fresh coat of GW purity seal they came up whitened...i was most p***ed off!

As the figures had gone dull I gave a test figure a brush of gloss varnish and then after shaking the tin vigourously for about 10mins a light dusting of the purity seal again.

This seemed to do the trick and the SCW lot are now restored to a similar finish to my other figs.

Not a nice experience that and one I'd not repeat - temperature and settling seem to be the cause.

I have seen it in the UK usually at small Hardware stores rather than the B&Q, Wickes-type places.

(I might try it myself, but after a big varnishing session at the weekend using DR with perfect results - again - and I might just stick as I am. Just this nagging fear of forumla changes in the future.)
