I remember reading the first book some years ago and I didn't like it  lol but they were a big hit down under...so they made a movie out of it:

Well Red Dawn was suppose to be remade on the same premise. So I guess Chian will just try and take over the world.  Thank god for good looking high school students, the world will be saved. lol

If this is based on the book series I am thinking of, the actual enemy was never actually named or identified... they just were.

Australian Red Dawn. We can frown upon it, but come on; secretely we all have a soft spot for that Cold War xenophobic propaganda vehicle and have rooted for Swayze and Grey in the safety of our own livingrooms every time it got aired, right? Right? Oh come on... lol

Probably good to be picked up as a discounted DVD sometime next year. Might be fun and inspiration for that one or another 'near future skirmish game' that's on the backburner eh? ;)

But in the movie version (judging by the trailer) you can see they are Asians  :? I bought the first book in 2000 and was very disappointed - it's a teen book, there's no global view of the war or what lead to it...nothing. Just the Australian version of the Wolverines :\

Which poses the question, was the author?

a) Pauline Hanson (unlikely, it's safe to assume she's functionally illiterate)
b) The late and unlamented Eric Butler.
c) John Winston Howard, reprising his cabinet vote in 1979, voting against the acceptance of Vietnamese 'boat people' and then reprising it again against Afghans and Iraqis.
d) Someone whose only reading material is a yellowing copy of the Bulletin, circa 1897.

The book, by John Marsden, is pretty awful. We're forced to study it in high school.

What I find most annoying is that it takes several books for any help to arrive, seriously, who's in charge of the relief effort? France?

And here in Australia, the books are considered "Teen Classics", Marsden speaks at schools and literature festivals like he's some kind of genius.

Boycott this movie and maybe they won't make any more. I'm going to go watch Red Dawn.

I think the fact that there is no enemy revealed and no reason for the war is actually the point of the story, that instead is character driven

the series appears to be very succesfull and to have a huge fan base
maybe it is not suitable for wargames but more for RPG?

Red dawn was a quite ugly propaganda artefect, IMHO

Naah! It was a product of it´s time! In the 80´s movie communists where the bad guys, just like black ninjas (white ninjas were the good guys), blond men with german accent and vampires with "kentucky-waterfall" haircuts. I like Red Dawn. But I do not see the movie from a serious perspective, rather as pure 80´s entertainment.

Sounds like a good idea on paper, but looks pretty fail in the trailer. that being said, I will pic it up if only for the sci-fi channel special affects team antics. I have a soft spot for campy movies  :D

Hehe, cool. The world needs more invasion literature, even if this is awful, it’s a start. I won’t read the book or watch the film, but it’s nice to know that someone out there is writing it.  What would be awesome would be a film based on some of the original Victorian invasion stories. A film of The Battle of Dorking would be fantastic.

Oh, and my money’s on Vanuatu as the invaders. I never trusted them.
I told you so. You damned fools.
