Lockheed Electra model 10 repainted
« on: July 05, 2010, 10:23:52 PM »
Last week I received the Lockheed Electra model 10 I bought at eBay. The original one was like this:

Way too clean and plastic. Time for some quick weathering. Here's what I did:

I took a piece of blister foam. I dipped this in P3 Armour Wash and pressed the foam to all kinds of places to apply a quick and messy wash. I used my fingers to spread it around where it got too thick. I made sure it was blacker around the engines, the nose and the wheels.
The second step was to take some P3 Bloodtracker Brown and do the same. This gave the rusty chips. Fast and simple.
I then took some Citadel Chainmail and blistered this along the place to take away some of the darker spots and make the plastic less plastic.
After this was all dry, I took the black from the Tamiya Weathering Kit (Link, set B) and applied this for a matte and deep black. Works really well. I also applied this to the deep crevices and then used my finger to wipe away the excess. This gave a nice, messy, sooty effect.
Finally, I painted the propellors and wheels with black. The wheels were drybryshed with browns and tans to make them dusty. I painted the tips of the propellors with blue and then weathered the propellors with Chainmail to make them look chipped and worn.
Done!

That metal effect is great. The flat black windows are a bit boring, though - not necessarily requiring "Blue" paint and individual highlights/reflections, but some layers of gloss varnish could do the job.

Really nice weathering! Nice size too, what scale is that?

Looking good and the plane works so well with 28mm figures.

Truly excellent !

But - - - - - Aluminum skin doesn't rust.

Still, looks great.

@Chris: The windows are dark seethrough plastic...quite cool actually but you can't see it on the photo. You can't see the inside of the plane very well, but you can see slightly through them. Nice window effect, so decided to keep them that way.

@blackstone: 1:60 (11" wing span 8" fuselage)

@chicklewis: Oh...DOH! :D. Ah well, it looks better this way ;)

Well, that's obviously even better! It just looked from the pics that they were just painted black onto the casing. :)

while aluminium doesn't rust, planes in use get very dirty very quickly if not regularly cleaned, especially somewhere hot and humid,

plus, as you say, it does look much better.

excellent work

Excellent looking plane but I wouldn't want to fly in it  ;)
