How do you go about it? Or do you paint over the original paint?

I paint them over, but you can dump them in brake fluid overnight as well. You´ll be able to peel the paint of next day.

Just remember to disassemble the car before soaking or the chrome will be coming off as well. Some plastics can go soft in the stuff as well. Pine based cleaners will also do the job as will Simple Green if you have a similar product on that side of the pond. ;)

I never bother stripping them, I just respray. Sometimes I use a primer and then acrylics, sometimes I've used an enamel model spray in my desired base colour and then worked from there.

I’ve just spray a grey (car) primer over mine.

I take them apart and use paint stripper on the metal parts.
