Wiki says they also shot the movie on the island of Rhodes...

From Wiki:"The Greek island of Rhodes  provided locations and Quinn was so taken with the area that he bought land there in an area still called Anthony Quinn Bay. Some further scenes were shot on the islands of Gozo, near Malta, and Palmaria, in the Ligurian Sea."

Very interesting to me, because Gozo is where my father was born and I had no idea of that.

The Gun set is quite nice, and very big.  They (Monday night productions) bought the rights to much of the scenic effects terrain after Ric and Wendy Schuldt divorced.  I still don't know why they don't make the basic bridge piece, only the ruined bridge.

Navarone was a fictitious island but the film was actually shot on small islands near Malta. 

Primarily Rhodes, I think. There is still a place there called Anthony Quinn Bay. I know this since it is a constant source of pride in my Greek uncle who lives there.

here are some facts:
.- Parts of the movie were  filmed in the island of Rhodes. Remember the night scene with german vehicles gathering below the castle gate with the 4 towers. This is the actual castle gate of Rhodes. (they might have altered a little the location,but the gate is the actual one)

.- the village where the outdoors marriage was filmed is an actual village filming
.- if the filming was taken place in Malta or other locations, this might be true. You have to check the details and acknowldgements after the end of the film.
.- the scenario is fictitious one. but the inspiration came from an actual battle, the battle of Leros, already mentioned. The scenario is a very pulpy one, involving a small band of specialists, local agents, double agents, some sort of romance and lots of action.

Some side information:
.- Anthony Quinn received the land free (or ridiculous low) charge to make touristic investments. Not yet realised.
.- The castle surrounds the actual old medieaval city which remains intact. The moat (empty) is also still visible!
In spite to the fact that there still arguments about the way the italians restored the castle, it is worth visiting the island of Rhodes in order to see and wander in the city and the St John's knights, plus the most famous  sea, sun, sand touristic attraction. And if you go it is also worth visiting the valley of the butterflies!
.- For those wanting to game a similar scenario, please note that Ian Weekly of battlements has made a resin castle gate exactly matching the impressive Rhodes castle gate! (a resin piece suitable for any scenario from medieval to pulp and modern times)

I was in Palmaria island last week-end It's a military island (one side is property of italian navy and the other side is property of aereonautica,aviation). On the island there are a lot of bunkers and artillery position from WWII. It's a wonderful scenario...
The final scene of the movie was not settled in palmaria but in the west side of Tino island (unaccesible little island near palmaria, property of italian navy, training place for consubin - italian  version of seals to understand). I saw the Tino west side from my kayak many years ago.
