League of Augsburg - help with findig resources!
« on: August 07, 2010, 01:24:21 AM »

Please help with finding any info of League of Augsburg uniforms (different regiments) and info about Nine Years War (I am noob in this era). I tried to google, but, unfortunately this is not very popular period :(
I saw that some persons who own this era minis paint their solder in different regimental patterns (with banners), so this is a proof that there are resources about this era :)

Which armies are you interested in?  There is a lot of info on the French and the Dutch armies in the booklets sold originally by Raider, written by Alan Sapherson.  I think they are still available from Caliver/Partizan. He also wrote a series on the British Army from James II through William but there is less info available on uniforms there.  You would probably find his stuff on Abebooks as well, second hand.

There is a lot of stuff on the French, especially on flags. on the Net but also on the history of various regiments which survived into the 18th Century.  Try places like here: http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=French_Army

Its really about the period of the Seven Years War but it gives regimental histories and shows their standards (which, for surviving regiments, rarely changed).  For other armies, however, you have to go to book(lets) like Sapherson's.  His one on the Dutch, for example is really excellent with regimental info, uniform colours and often standards as well.

there are two volumes, both by Charles S Grant. I can recommend them.

Have a look at Caliver Books website for details.

Look for the CDs by Robert Hall, they cover most of the uniforms of the period.

Fjodin, join the yahoo group named Early_Linear_Warfare.

Also, go to the web store On Military Matters and look through the offerings under Late 17th Century and Marlburian.  Most of what you want is under Marlburian, because several of the excellent uniform CDs by Robert Hall, Claus-Peter Goldberg, and Giancarlo Boeri cover both the late 17th Century and the early 18th Century on one CD.  Giancarlo Boeri has done excellent CDs on Spain and Piedmont.  Robert Hall has done massive CDs on France.  Claus-Peter Goldberg has done CDs on some of the German states.  I have several of these CDs, and they are excellent.  The CDs show the changes in uniforms and headgear in the same regiment over the 1688 to 1715 period. In some respects, with the way it played out, this was one big war with a short armistice in the middle.
