Do you know this officer? Please help me id a photo.
« on: 12 August 2010, 02:24:08 AM »
A photo portrait my wife and I picked up at an antique fair. I'm guessing he's French or Belgian. Can anyone give me a clue as to his identity or his time and area of service.

Thanks,

Mike

I think he's a Prussian postman, but I could be wrong  ;)

Don’t know who he is either but he doesn’t look French to me… Austrian maybe?

The hat is too short  a cut for Austria-Hungry and is almost a direct copy of the hat of a Marshal of France. But no Legion d' Honor is visible (a given for a Marshal of France) and there are minor differences with the gilting.  So he is most likely a Marshal or other high ranking officer-nobility from an ally or country that admired France. Not my era but a spot of Google-fu brought up this Romanian military history forum and some of the kepis have very similar looking parts to them...

The pompom in the front doesn't look right on a GW Frenchman nor Belgian. A Serb, Montenegrin or Bulgarian?
