Thats a difficult one as we all have different takes on Cthulhu, the following is a list of ones I have.

Call of Cthulhu Fan made Black and white, Enjoyable but not fantastic
Cthulhu- some good bits but its really a version of Shadow over innsmouth
Dagon- again some good bits another version of shadow over innsmouth
Hp lovecraft collection 1- Cool Air good adaptation  other bits are fun
Hp lovecraft collection 2-Rough Magik-Really enjoyed this one but modern setting
Hp lovecraft collection 3-Out of Mind some cool bits
Hp lovecraft collection 5- Thing on the doorstep low budget but suprisingly good
Castle Freak-not lovecraft but uses some ideas from him
The Lurking Fear- straight to video a couple of visual bits
Bleeders- Trys hard but not up to Lovecraft
Re animator series some ideas but barking mad
Dunwich Horror- Mad stuff, very 60s Psychedelic  ;)
The Shunned house- badly done italian film actually music of eric zann and dreams of witch house

to be continued

yet more
Masters of Horror Dreams in the witch House- Okay adapt
Evil Dead series not really pure but first are good at creating horror in the woods
Cast a deadly spell/Witch hunt- really hard to find but great rifts on Hp Lovecraft
The Beyond- Mad bloody italian gore
From Beyond- okay
Necromonicon- some good bits but only for the completist
The Unnamable 1/2 beer and pizza movies not much more

Not strictly HP lovecraft but gets the feeling of his stories
Alien- Ghost story in space
The Thing- Its the Mountains of Madness if you squint
The Ninth gate- Book dealer that goes on a search for a cursed book
Masters of Horror-Cigerrette burns- search for a rare film breaks down veils of sanity
Lord of illusions- Clive Barker shows evil of cult
In the mouth of Madness- Really like this one just to get references
Hellboy 1/2 Really cool and so many references look out for the elder ones in the troll market
Event Horizon-some cool ideas good for Sci fi cthulhu

Even More  ;D
The Mist- Good film very Lovecraft including ending
The Devils backbone- Great film and why I think Mountains of Madness will rock
Society- cool shoggoth ideas

Movies to avoid like the plague
Cthulhu mansion- why oh why did I watch this
Alone in the dark- I spent money on this ::)

My top 5 would be
In the mouth of madness
Rough Magik
Thing on the doorstep
Devils Backbone
The Thing

I know that only 1 is based on a H P Lovecraft story, but the others get the tone better.

I hope this essay is of some help, my advice is keep an eye on ebay and don't pay a lot for any of them, be warned some are almost impossible to get (Cast a deadly spell/Witch hunt )

Ben  ;D

You might want to check out the HP Lovecraft Historical Society's website (http://www.cthulhulives.org/toc.html). They're the guys and gals who created the silent "Call of Cthulhu" movie. They're working on an adaptation of "The Whisperer in the Dark" which I am really looking forward to because the Mi-Go are one of the best creation of HPL in my humble opinion. There's a trailer available on the website. It's also on YouTube.

Yours truly,

Sir Dryden

You forgot "H.P. Lovecraft's The Tomb" that came out a few years ago...

Well worth NOT seeing...

And don't forget "The Unnamable II" -- But it was more like the "The Statement of Randolph Carter".  But its got a nekkid chick through most of the movie... ;)

Both were better than than "Cthulhu" (Innsmouth rip off).  Worst Lovecraft flick ever made.

A few more:

The Resurrected - A fairly entertaining update to the 90's of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. (One of my faves, mostly thanks to the dour atmosphere and the scenes of the discovery of Curwen's experiments and of the exploration of Curwen's underground lair.)

Die, Monster, Die! - Karloff meets The Colour Out of Space. A fun 60's movie, IMHO, in the spirit of the old Vincent Price/Roger Corman Poe flicks.

The Haunted Palace - Speaking of Price/Corman, here they give us their own take on The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (despite the title of the film and the intro, both of which are taken from the Poe poem). It's like Lovecraft meets Corman's The Pit and the Pendulum or The Masque of the Red Death. Another fun movie, full of Corman's typically brooding atmosphere - and did I mention that it stars Vincent Price?!

Cast a deadly spell rocks!

And there's the Dunwich Horror when Armatige gives the Necro to a student and says here take this back to the libre=ary will you? And of course you call Yog-Sothoth chant and hand signal (a bit like Ta-Ton-Ka in Dances with wolves)

Show try the Shadow too, not Lovecraft but great fun

On an aside also try Zorro the Gay Blade and The Roller Blade Seven with FRANK Stallone

The Scifi channel (do you brits get that?) made a Dunwich horror.
Stay away from it if you value anything that resembles sanity.
I couldn't stomach the first five minutes of it.
