www.wargameholidays.com goes live
« on: September 15, 2010, 09:22:19 AM »
Way back in the 1980s I was lucky enough to spend a week at Peter Gilder's Wargame Holiday Centre at his Enchanted Cottage (I think that's what it was called).
To cut a long story short, thirty years later, I decided to open my own wargame holiday centre. Not content with the sheer logistics of getting a massive table built, collecting and painting up the troops and building all the terrain, I decided that the best place to do it would be 1500 miles away.
So was born our version of the Wargame Holiday.  The website is now live at www.wargameholiday.com
Our first week starts on May 17 2011, we aim to run for six weeks initially.
We've built a huge 45 x 6 foot table - which we aim to add to in due course.  All of the terrain and buildings are scratchbuilt.  On offer to play is:

ACW 28mm - refights of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville
Indian Mutiny 28mm - historical and fictional scenarios
Anglo Zulu War 15mm - Isandlwana
WW2 Crete 1941 20mm - covering the whole region from the Tavronitis Bridge to Chania, including Maleme and the Prison Valley
WW2 Normandy 1944 20mm - battles around Caen and breakout battles

We have thousands of figures for each of the periods, the website has more information and lots of pictures.  We are updating the website with new pictures as we take them.

The URL leaves me with a error message. Good luck with this venture anyway. Did I live in your neck of the woods I would probably be a customer.

www.wargameholidays.com

That's just me doing things quickly and not checking......apologies.

Return flights from Stockholm to Heraklion are around 249 Euros, probably less in May or June if you book ahead.  Direct flights I think.

Too slow I was there in the summer for a holiday.
Good luck with the idea. Sounds great.

Haven't updated for a while.  Enquiries and bookings coming along nicely.  We may well be open for at least another two weeks (last week in August and first in September).  Do let us know if that might be of interest to anyone.  Places for the last week in August may be tight.
Progressing well with the collections and about to finish off the Normandy 20mm stuff in the next month or so.

We still have places available from May 24 to June 28 2011 at the Wargame Holidays centre on the Mediterranean island of Crete, Greece. Seven days bed and breakfast and four full days of wargaming costs as little as 255 Euros (£212 or US$322) for three wargamers sharing an apartment. What's more we'll pick you up from Heraklion airport and take you back in time for your return flight too. There are numerous flights to the island, either direct or via Athens each day.
Come as a group or bring your partner as we have just ten apartments in lovely grounds around an infinity pool. There is a restaurant and bar on site.
The wargames are played in a large, cool and airy basement. We have a vast 45 foot by 6 foot table. Games on offer include American Civil War (28mm), World War Two in Crete (1941) and Normandy (1944), both in 20mm, Indian Mutiny (28mm) and the Anglo Zulu War (15mm).
Crete is a fantastic holiday location with an unrivalled selection of historical sites from the Minoans and the Romans to the Ottomans and the Venetians.
Combine a great site seeing and shopping holiday with wargaming for the best of both worlds. Get a tan into the bargain as you relax around the pool after a day's gaming.

Nice quote from Joe Dever about the centre:

"Great venue, great games, wonderful company. I've very fond memories of the test week and I can highly recommend Wargames Holidays. It's something different and very special on the wargames scene."

Thanks Joe.  Joe was one of the guests who helped test the centre out for us in June 2010.
