Can you help me to paint red squirrels?
« on: September 19, 2010, 04:43:47 PM »
Now I am getting over my chest infection et. al I've been looking at the next stage of the big board build and the figures I want to paint first.  I would love to be able to paint the Splintered Light squirrels as UK red squirrels but am unsure of the base colours.

The figures I have are:

And the image I would love to convey is:

The problem I have is that the reds I have are great for blood and gore but not for the rusty look I am after...

Thanks in advance
Andrew

I would start with a base of burnt sienna, highlight up to a bright orange, and then wash it with a 50% chestnut ink to blend them together. Is that helpful?

The issue I see is that they aren't really red, but an orange toned brown, and I think the name is throwing you off in how you are approaching it.

Burnt Sienna is the way to go, pretty handy for foxes too.

Well the trick is in catching them first!
.....oh, not those sort of red squirrels.

Vallejo MC 981 Orange-Brown would be a good base coat - wash with sepia, perhaps?

Reddish/orangy browns I do with GW paints:

Dark Flesh - Vermin Brown - Vomit Brown. Intermix as needed to get smooth transitions.

Yup all of the above, I am painting foxes and weasels at the moment and it is surprising how they all have similar fur colours. What I find is the little things like tufts on the ears, tails and around the mouth etc make the effective differences.

My issue will be painting the Wolverines and Wild cats

Brilliant advice and not too much drift  ;)

I did think that eating the cute critters was a US thing (sorry stereotypical or what) till I did a quick surf to find out what it tasted like and the first hit was The Guardian

For those now thinking it may be interesting to try (as I am) I have found http://www.wildmeat.co.uk/squirrel_meat.htm?ac=HXN5N-U but at £4.50 each it may be awhile...
