Zombies and guns
« on: 20 September 2010, 11:54:45 AM »
Copplestone has in his FUTURE WARS catalog some miniatures representing military zombies that bracing of firearms.

By You, may Zombies use these weapons?
It seems to me that in most cases, the zombies you see in the classic film of this genre (including the last, Rodriguez's Planet Terror), when humans are killed and reborn as zombies are kind of robots with no ability to use weapons.
What do you think?

Bye.

In the Dead walk Again rules, zeds with guns just automatically fire them at the nearest model.

Then again, gunshots attract more zeds  :D

A few of mine are holding rifle buts and pistols, but no ranged fire rules for zombies in my games. Might be worth using a 'random round' rule, where those with weapons who are in combat/sight of survivors may accidentally let a round off, roll 2d6 go decide direction and see who gets hit? Obviously then the shot can draw more zombies in...gulp.

For me, if I was playing a game with "classic" zombies, I would not have them use the weapons.  I'd figure they were holding them when they perished and don't have the sense to let go of them.  But that's just me and I will say I kinda like Commander Vyper's idea of a random round firing off.  But it really depends on how YOU want to play them.  If your a fan of Romero, he has set a precedent in his movies for intelligent zombies.  In fact there seems to be at least one in every movie.  Also the miniatures themselves look very capable of using their weapons.  They could be the result of some military experiment to create a super soldier that has gone wrong.  Maybe they were developed to help combat the zombie menace.  Play a round where the soldier zombies combat the other zombies and then play another round where the the soldier zombies have to be "retired" having served their purpose.

In Apocalyspe Z, some zombies keep some "memories" of their lives and can use weaponry. But IMHO, in most case, zombies are too dumb to use more than poles and pipes... firearms may be fired if hold in hand before being infected by "accidental" contraction of their muscles. But when zombies walk, they often point their arms towards the ground.

I must agree with some of the others, my zombies are too brain dead to function in any intelligent way other than ....BRAINS !

I concur. Too brainless to use them.

But...

If your zombies seem to possess some residual memories of their "living existence" (making them try to go to a shopping mall for instance) then you might allow the police, swat, soldiers, and other military units to pull the trigger when they see prey. But they would not be able to aim the guns in any way, shape, or form.

But, like Argonor said, it WOULD attract a lot more of the shambling dead.  :D

That would liven up the game a little bit.

Again I'd suggest something along the lines of this for a bit of random tendon twitching trigger tugging from beyond the grave....

They could be out of ammo, in which case the guns would be useless anyway. The guy who really worries me is the one on the left with the grenade in his hand  :o

If you play using the All Things Zombie rules by Two Hour Wargames, they just release I, Zombie that indroduces Smart Zombies, also known as Smarties, that can use firearms, though once the firearm is out of ammo they drop the gun.

I don't think they could use firearms. However, I just watched Zombie Land (Hilarious BTW) and they had some zombie climbing ladders and opening doors...

I think in terms of gameplay, Smart zombies might add more carnage

Many thanks for your answers and comments (very interesting), which we will take present to better characterize the Zombies for our Naran Future Wars.
Speaking of Zombies, we refer in particular to those of the Resident Evil trilogy, and the same, such as those of Rodriguez-Tarantino's  Planet Terror.
Broadening the conversation, according by You, the Zombies of this type, who in life had been expert men in the martial arts (karate, kung fu, etc..), when they reborn as living deads they will  or not maintain that their skills?

For me, their weapons are either used like a blunt weapon or occasionally can be used to actively fire upon targets but at a most horrendous accuracy rating and are very susceptible to running out of ammo really fast and would not be able to reload. Though I do like the idea of random accidental discharge and the classic Romero smarty.

That's funny. I hadn't read your post until after I made mine and yet we both called the semi-intelligents 'smarties'. :)

Anyone ever played Half-Life 2? The zombines (zombiefied Trans-Human Combine Overwatch) will pull out a grenade and rush the player with it, which is really bad because they've got body armour on making for a harder target to shoot down.

Karate zombies? That sounds like a B-movie plot. I love it :D. In all seriousness though, pulling a trigger is a lot more easy than flipping someone on their back in an arm-twisting hold. :)

Many thanks for the answers.
Do you know of there are any movie pictuers or literary work or cartoons in which there are any zombies who practice martial arts?
