Jungle Rock
« on: 21 September 2010, 07:36:38 AM »
Originally meant for a local gaming club. Now part of my own collection instead (as I'm not in the club anymore).

They're done from cheap expanding foam.. and of course I've learned in the mean time that cork bark is the shizzle and the next time I'm doing jungle rock (whenever) I'm probably going to mix the two.   :`

Hi Thorbjørn

When you say 'expanding foam', is that just regular 'styropor' insulation tiles? As comes in different thicknesses in builder's stores?

Or did you use some of the blue/pink stuff that cannot be had in our country?

I think the rocks look fine - rocks come in all kinds of types - cork is especially good for heavily eroded rock faces, like river beds and such, but of course also for sheer 'rock walls' leading up to that plateau with the lost city...  ;)
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Oh, that stuff - you really do not like your brain cells, do you?  ;)

You can actually make some very interesting rock shapes with it, though.

Some GW guys made a very large 3D vertical Moria table using some spray cans of the stuff some years ago.

No, I'm going to be a chemist. What will I need a brain for?

Yes I saw that one too. I recall looking at the painted thing and go "oh, how lovely - that looks just like PU foam"... which it was.  :`

Yeah, that Moria table, whilst cool did look like piles of dog turd rather than rock.

Cork is the way forward.

However, Thorbjorn, these are lovely too. I like the little doorway in one of them.

Yes, apparently lots of barn roofs look like Moria from the inside  lol

I do like the molten look of it, when it is just sprayed on something and left to dry, though. Would be nice for some weird rock formations on alien planets, and such.

For one of my fine art projects, I filled tights with expanding foam and cut holes into the tights. I then squeezed and pushed the foam (whilst wearing rubber gloves) out to create interesting elephantitis-looking shapes.
At the time, I thought they would make good movie props, but perhaps sci fi scenery???  :)

This reminds of all those times I harassed someone over terrain they made for the SST miniatures game that wasn't carved and looked nothing other than dog biscuits. Fond times.

how do you make these using that can foam?

Do you spray it on to a surface and that is it, or do you carve them once set?

I want to make some wild west bad lands and this could be an easy way to get it done, so and info would be helpful.

Am pretty sure, these have been carved - as has been stated, the stuff looks more like big piles of dung when just sprayed from the can.

But the material is probably MUCH easier to carve/cut than styropor (the materal made from millions of small pieces somehow pressed together, and making a horible mess if cut with anything but a hot wire cutter (which, in turn, produces toxic fumes...  ::)  )

Carved them into less roundish shapes with a bread knife. Took about 5 seconds.

Just put a lump of the foam on the base and waited for it to set... (it's sticks like glue)

You should do it all outdoors. Let them cure and do the cutting out doors.. it's quite messy and not very healthy.
