Foundry Ratcatcher
« on: 04 October 2010, 07:08:26 PM »

I was so excited the whole day to get him painted...left my work in a rush and three hours later that´s the result. I´m more and more happy with my pics, thanks to everyone who gave advices (sorry I can´t remember you all ;-) I´ll use him in my Steampunk setting, but obviously he isn´t a Ratnik, so started a new thread.

Great work on that. I love the hair and face and the deep, rich red of the trousers.

It look like the colors are more blended together than on your earlier figures. It look less "patchy"… if that make any sense… Anyhow, that’s a really nice paintjob 8)

Wonderful!

Now you're getting the hang of photography, can you do a quick summary of your method?

I'm going to build a 'light box' with diffusing side and top panels for the missus (jewelry) and myself (minis), but, like painting, you can never have enough input on how to take pictures of the little bastards (no, not my kids, there's a setting on my digi-cam for that  ;)  ).
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Thanks fellas!
Argonor, I changed my lamps to daylight, but that isn´t the main point . I discovered that my Fireworks programm has a "filter" function. There I click "Farbe anpassen (adjust colour)" and than turn up the brightness until I´m satisfied. Hope that helps? Before this procedure pics look like this:

As I mentioned on your blog, this fella looks spectacular. The face is full of character, the paint-job is top-notch and the I really like the ginger hair.

You can do an *awful* lot with a mid range graphics program. I use Paint Shop Pro (mostly) and have four favourite buttons for adjusting Contrast, Brightness, Colour Saturation ans Sharpness (which probably uses parts of the previous algorithms). For some weird reason I feel guilty for doing it, like I am cheating, but the truth is that it makes the minis look more like I perceive them in RL.

That said, I feel you are doing the right thing ensuring you have proper lightning (good daylight bulbs, reflectors and some sort of filter for diffusion). You can do a lot with editing software but it take some experience. I find it easier to get as much as possible right from the start.

The parts of my box cost me about €40 and 90% of that was spent on energy efficient daylight bulbs. The three reflectors, fully serviceable aluminium bowls, cost me perhaps €5 for three. The rest was done with duck tape, a cardboard box and drawing paper.

Stonking Ratcatcher, Hazel. A bit of a favourite of mine, that mini.

Lovely. I particularly like the black hat highlights - something I know how to do in theory, but am never quite happy with in practice.
