First experiments with metal spincasting

In a desperate attempt to try out my new toy, a small, homemade spincaster, I made a mold of several of my latest sculpts. For a first try, I think they came out really good:



The little man on the right is a resin cast of one of my earlier sculpts. I have to say that I like the metal casts a lot better for a variety of reasons: they are not half as flimsy as resin casts, they are slightly more forgiving in regards to sculpting deficiencies :mrgreen: and, most important, miscasts can be melted down for another go ::

I'll post a few pictures when I have painted those.

I made them after watching Silent Hill, although I have to admit that they don't bear resemblance to anything from that movie. However, I think they look more Clive Barker than H. P. Lovecraft. Which of course does not mean you cannot use them for Cthulhu games.

Ah, ok. Didn't know these. Maybe it was just the eyeless head which reminded me of Barker. Or maybe it is just the staying up late, watching movies that are not good for me  ::

Very nice, would you care to decribe your home made toy and the process (rubber type etc)?

My "toy" was built from an old... hm, don't know the word, a machine used to rewind the big reels of film in cinemas? Other parts were milled from aluminium, the electronic components were ordered from Conrad Electronics.

The mold itself is made from RTV from Glorex. Here is a picture:

I am not really satisfied with the material however, some of the caverns were damaged after the third spin already. And it takes an awful lot of time to build a RTV mold usable for spincasting. I think in the long run, I'd be better off with vulcanized rubber molds. Now, how to build a vulcanizer...?

Excellent quality. I built one myself out of a fan (I used centripetal force and cups, rather than the more traditional disk method), but after perfecting it -- I realised I didn't actually have anything worth casting...

I'm impressed with your sculpts. I wish more hobbyists would build home spincasters and put their work out there.

Nothing too special on the paintjob, just a few washes. I guess most of you people can do a lot better.

Drisco, I'll add two of those to the trenches I'll be dropping tomorrow morning at your place
