Golgfag's Mercenary Ogres
« on: 11 November 2010, 09:53:46 PM »
Thought I'd start a new topic for these old boys as they're a bit separate from my other ball and chains, er.. I mean projects!  :D

A massive thanks again to Lead Asbestos (forever in your debt!) for supplying these great minis- standard bearer and musician aren't too far behind...

So here's Golgfag himself - continued the Rutdrogg/Red Wolf theme on the shields - rather enjoying experimenting painting with varying thicknesses of one colour (with the odd dash of black and white...) to achieve highlights and shading on the nice flat surfaces the shields provide!

I'll also include the other pics of the two troopers I painted a while back for completeness' sake - originally posted them in the Orc's Drift thread while I was on automatic piolt.  ::)

Talking of which - just noticed I haven't painted the metal studs on his tunic! D'oh - I'll have to post finished pics along with the rest of the command group - now to scour ebay for the champion!

Ah, I have those figures! They're very good. Although a bit retetitiv - but that's how it was back then. I like the designs on the back of the shield, it's a nice effect. The bases strike me as a tad big? Any reason for that?

Goo work :) Looking forward to seeing the whole unit!

Yeah maybe I should have got slightly smaller ones - although I think they only do these particular resin bases in 25 or 50mm.

I'd already based up some of the later Jes Goodwin Ogres like this and thought I'd do the same for Golgfag - but as you may know the Golgfag minis are a tad smaller than the Goodwin ones...

Maybe they're just trying to compensate for something else...  ;)

There's an eay way of checking... actually, now that you mentioned that I recently received an old Bob Olley Black Orc with his bollocks out :?

Good job, anyhow :) Makes me want to get mine painted!

Cheers - but not for the image of Black Orc bollocks!  lol

Actually I should have thought twice after I saw Hetz's great idea of painting Golgfag ogres up as black orcs - they look very convincing as such when put on a 25mm base and painted green!

You have the champion!?  :D

I nealy said all you sent me was the standard bearer, musician, 2 troopers and Golgfag - but they were much appreciated!

If you felt the need to part with him I wouldn't argue too strongly with you...  ;)

I only stumbled across this thread because I Googled 'Black Orc with his bollocks out'.  Admittedly this was not quite what I was after, but some more cool old-skool stuff Thantsants!

Are you using a flash when you take those photos? The reason I ask is because I want to see the shield designs without the glare :)

Citadel/GW tends to do a great job on ogres, and you've certainly done them proud!  Love the shields, especially.

Are you sure this unit had a champion? I was thinking it only had Golgfag, the musician and standard bearer.  There was one earlier ogre regiment, I think, and it may have had a champion.

Here is a link to the second version of the unit, from Stuff of Legends.  It does show what appears the be a champion (the first version had one for sure).  The boxed set I bought of Golfag's boys did not include this figure, I don't think.  I'll have to root them out later and check, but he does not look familiar.

No flash - just my crappy lighting! Fair point though - thought I'd just about got away with it...

Halogen desk light died so I was using one with a regular light bulb which is a bit harsh. I was finding it tricky to fix it so there was no glare on the background, getting everything else lit up fairly evenly and making sure the shields didn't get too shiny...  >:(

Just about got the hang of this painting lark and taking basic pics - maybe I should start reading up on advanced lighting techniques now!  lol

Got a new halogen lamp now - dunno if that's the right way about it but they seem to cast a nice even level of light - just in the process of basing up the standard and musician so I will endeavour to get pics up later - including all the shield designs...  :D

As for the champion - I was going off SOL too and assumed he was part of the set - wouldn't mind getting hold of him either way to give the unit a bit more variety.
