Pulp Soviets?
« on: August 30, 2007, 01:26:57 AM »
I've seen alot of concepts for pulp Germans and pulp Americans, and even some good ones for pulp Brits (especially the guy with the Celtic myth creatures on Darkson's) but apart from psychic Lenin clones and Tesla Troopers (which I object to on the grounds that Tesla's technology would have been far more likely to wind up being used by the Yanks), I haven't really seen any Soviet ideas.

Proletarian gang - some musclemen with red banners/t-shirts, armed with hammer and sickles
NKVD guard - black dressed with leather jackets, armed with mausers, driving black cars
Werebears - would really like to do, but not really much suitable minis out there
Baba Yaga  an old partei member, a loyal follower of Stalin, uses a top secret flying device

The Copplestone Future Wars range carries Neo-Sovs which might make good Wierd WWII Russians as the uniforms are not too disimilar from Soviet WWII ones

They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....

Are you looking for models or ideas for character/troop types?

If you are after models Artizan have recently released Koschei's Cossacks.

Darkson are going to be coming out with some psychic troops for the Soviets and they do indeed use Tesla technology for the Americans in their background.

They already have a few Soviet troops but you can expect more from them soon as they are going to be releasing the Soviet sarter pack in December to coincide with the release of their AE-WWII rules.

Stalin was reported to have started research into ape-men:

http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=2434192005

I don't know if there are any suitable figures, maybe look at something like Planet of the Apes type figures, or Eureka's Apes in Boiler Suits, or maybe GW Ogryns re-equipped with more appropriate weaponry.

As part of the Darkson Designs interview on TGN, Matt and Rob specifically mentioned man-ape figures coming out for the Soviets.

OK, here goes, hope you guys enjoy...

Death Batallions
Whilst Penal batallions provided a fantastic asset for the Soviet Union more men were needed. The worst gulags were opened up and POW's added to the numbers. Issued with a neck collar filled with explosive and a chest pouch filled with TNT (of which they are unaware) they are forced towards the enemy with nothing but a few blades and sharpened digging tools. When they reach the enemy a Commissar behind the lines can choose to activate their TNT charges, turning them into unwilling suicide bombers. If at any time a Death Trooper disobeys the Commissar he can trigger the neck charge, killing the individual without disturbing the TNT.

Guards
Guards are the elite of the Soviet forces. Equipped with the best equipment, camouflage smocks, rivier wading equipment and basic body armour they act as shock troops, smashing holes that can be exploited by the infantry and conscripts.

Buyan
Buyan are the elite of Soviet Scout troops, equipped with the latest equipment from the Soviet war factories based on the Tunguska Ship. Their Buyan field generators allow them to slip in and out of reality in small jumps. If a jump takes too long though it is not unknown for Buyan troopers to disappear completely, never to be seen again.

Indrik
One of the most potent scientific Soviet inventions has been the so called Indrik Serum. Like a steroid it significantly increases the strength of an individual. Unlike most steroids this one continually does, making the Indrik trooper stronger and stronger until after two days the body collapses entirely. To further improve the Indriks already formidable combat prowess they are equipped with huge metal gauntlets that cover most of their forearms.

Shishiga
In the ruins of the Tunguska Ship was found a strange metallic cylinder. Early tests were performed on inmates froma local female gulag and were disasterous. Machines would fail, scientists had deadly accidents and one general was even killed when he slipped on a hastily mopped floor. Sovet scientists were amiss to explain how such misfortunes coulkd take place until they realised that the misfortunes had only occurred since the female prisoners had the cylinders inserted into their bodies. Scientificly speaking they remain at a loss but the Politburo and Comrade Stalin knew what to do. Now female troops, in honour of the original test subjects- now executed, are implanted with the cyinder and told to get as close as possible to the enemy, dogging their luck. Where a Shishiga goes vehicles break down, guns jam and planes crash.

Sirin
Another offshoot of the equipment found on the Tunguska Ship was the Sirin projector. When placed inside living tissue it grew, affecting the vocal cords, brain and pheremones. They allowed the troops implanted to sing in a manner that would affect peoples brains. Tuning their singing to a single brain frequency allowed a Sirin to gain a limited degree of control over that enemy and force them to their will.

Syvatogor
One of the more bizarre Soviet breakthroughs was the Syvatogor solution, a  gas that upon contact with solids would freeze to a temperature of -120 degrees Celsius. Using flamethrower-esque equipment and a long apron-coat coated with a second solution that avoids the immediate freezing effect Soviet troops can bring their winter with them.

Tugarin Zmeyevich
These troops have two notable abilities. The first is to create patches of smoke. These can be used to mask Soviet troops and to cause enemies to choke. Their second is to shoot sparks of fire from their mouth and hands thanks to small glands attatched there.

Rusalka
Another branch of the Tunguska studies ended with the creation of Rusalka.  A bio-organic organism could be attatched to a subject where it would meld into the skin. Obvious changes took a while to e noted. The eyes of a host would go a deep, bright green. The subjects also became dumb for a period of weeks. After that they bagan speaking again- with dire consequences. It appeared that the Rusalkas could now use verbal communication to kill by using precisely the right pitch or tone. Certain words too including strangely, Stalin, were discovered to be perfect for the right killing frequency. These killing words are scremed in battle by the Rusalkas allowing them to create a range of effects from a simple brain haemorrage to the explosion of every organ in an enemies body.

Raskovnik
Lacking anti-tank capability for the infantry meant that the Raskovnik device was a blessing when discovered in the Tunguska ship. Taking the form of a fungus that infests living tissue it has one bizarre ability, namely to unlock and pull things out. Therefore an infected host can, when concentrating, open door locks, unscrew bolts and other similarl miscillenia. On tanks and armoured vehicles this turned intoa  deadly ability as Raskovniks unscrewed bolts holding tanks together, causing armour to fall off.

Xanjan
The Xanjan gauntlets are a stange device. Powered by screeching turbines and an Omi generator which glows a spectral blue it allows the wearer to reach inside a persons body and rip their life force out. The arm used to reach inside the enemy appears like a shadow of an arm. Quite what or how they rip this life force out is unknown, even to the troopers. They have decribed how once they think they should attack the gauntlets and Omi generator seem to mentally take control.

Anapel
Anapel's have a miraculous ability to heal. Wounds reknit, missing limbs grow back and skin reforms on burns. Only a concerted amount of damage ina short period can kill an Anapel and only then because the psychological effect leads the Anapel to believe he must be dead, therefore stopping his heart.

Kini'je
Out of the wilds of Siberia appeared the Kini'je to fight the fascists. Or so the propaganda said. In reality they were discovered by an NKVD experdition and press ganged to fight, their wives and children held as hostages. These masters control time to a limited degree, stepping in and out of the flow with the result that they can dodge some bullets or move incredibly fast.

Nu'tenut
Another Siberian tribe affected by the Tunguska crash were the Nu'tenut. With a single concious thought they can turn their skin to iron, the metal rippling along their body, deflecting bullets and allowing them to smash their hands through cars.

Yekyua
Named after the shamanic familiars Yekyua can steal the energy from all forms of living things, shrivelling trees and stopping the hearts of beasts. They can then use this energy to performa  variety of magical manouevers including jumping metres into the sky, causing miniature explosions and smashing enemies with invisible blows.

Yina
Yina translates as fog. Those injected with the Yina drug can create fogs around their bodies to hide themselves whilst they sneak closer. Superb assassins they are trained to hide in the fog, ducking and weaving, until they can reach their prey and kill it for the Motherland. Urrah!

Abaasy
These strange men have had their lower jaw and teeth replaced with mechanical and metal substitutes that allow them to bite a mans limb from his doby. Coming from the most unlearned districts they are thought to be too stupid to be taught to be soldiers and so are used as horror weapons instead.

Pitsen
An experiment in colouration the Pitsen have the ability to choose their body colour. In war the Soviets have used this to create troops naturally ready for cmouflage, who can meld in with their surroundings before launching ambushes. Pitsen have done extraordinarily well working with partisans even if they are held in fear by it. As the Politburo said in a recent radio broadcast, "Pitsen are comrades of the Motherland. Any patriots who are scared by them must surely be kulaks and dealt with as such." Complaints have lessened signifigently since then.[/b]

Incredible imagination!!!  :o

The idea of making use of the Tunguska incident is simply genious. And the Shigisha can make very funny situations...

Tunguska is SO handy - I once had some fluff and models written up for a pulp RCW setting with giant robots and evil aliens, but never got around finishing that up.

Yes, old Xeo has a hand for that kind of stuff.

Oooh...Tunguska and RCW. Juicy.    I can just see the Black Army trying to convert aliens through the power of anarchic values or Universal Robot Repair for all Comrade Mechanoids.

You should post that fluff. I know I'd love to see it.

Wow. Just wow.
Once again, i'm in AWE of what you lot can come up with!

Many thanks, and keep 'em coming if anyone else has suggestions.

I was thinking concepts rather than models, but it all adds together, y'know?

Once again, Awe-struck!  :o
