Question about Vallejo paints for FIW
« on: November 28, 2010, 05:40:19 PM »
Calling all those of you who use Vallejo as your main paints supplier.

An American customer is hoping for an opinion on which Vallejo colours would be best for fleshtones for "Woodland Indians", starting with a dark brown.

He'd also appreciate suggestions for buckskin and red and blue blanketcloth.

I can easily give him my best guesses from the colour chart, but an opinion from someone who uses them would be far more helpful to him.

I abortively started to move over to Vallejo from Citadel and Humbrol on a trial basis about 10 years ago, but quickly moved on to Foundry paints as I was working there and got a very good discount  ;)

I'm sure he'll appreciate any input.

For skincolours try this site: http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/1310
On the other questions I'm sorry but I can't help. I painted some mountain men (see below pictures) using Vallejo model colour, but I can't remember exactly which colours I used.

Vallejo red leather 70818 cut with dark flesh 70927, gradually increase the amount of dark flesh in the mix for successive highlights, and mix in a spot of white for the final highlight.

Buckskin is more difficult - there are lots of ways you could achieve that, but I tend to use GW colours for yellows, yellow browns and creams, not Vallejo.

I'm not an expert painter and so I don't know if it'll help but my own experience is also that a bit of mixing is required.

My process is as follows:

Base: Games Workshop Bestial Brown
Wash:  any flat black that will water down
Tidy up extraneous wash: Games Workshop Bestial Brown
Mid coat: Vallejo Model Color Beige Red 804
Highlight: Vallejo Model Color Medium Flesh Tone 860

For buckskin I tend to use US Field Drab 873, then a black wash, then more 873 to tidy up and  finishing with 873 + some off white.  The effect is as per the leggings worn to left and right.

My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2024 = 32
(2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)
