Modern Civilian Aircraft
« on: December 31, 2010, 02:56:26 AM »
I have been thinking about doing a small civilian airport as a game board for my zombie game.

However I know nothing about modern civilian aircraft.  I have a nice diecast of a coast guard helicoplter in 1:48th scale.  But what other types of civilian helicopters are available in model or diecast form?

Also what type of civilian aircraft would you find at a small airport if the zombie apoc started today?  There is a huge number of Cessna models available in 1:48th scale but I don't know what year they are from at all.  Anyone here know something of civilian aircraft?  I also found a model of a Piper Cherokee but again don't know if that would be found at a small airport today?  Any links to small modern civilian aircraft that would be appropriate today would be appreciated...especially in diecast as I prefer them over having to build a more fragile model.

Also what type of modern military helicopter would the National Guard be using today?  Or the Marines?  Again would prefer a diecast in 1:48th.

Thanks!

Almost certainly. After the Cessna 172 & 182 models, the Cherokee is one of the most common small aircraft going.

Generally, aircraft last longer than cars. The vast majority of small private aircraft out there are going to date from the 1970s or earlier. There was a real drop in production in the 1980s, for a variety of boring reasons, then production started to climb slowly in the mid 90s. So anything that looks fairly modern could well be spotted on the apron of a small airport.

The Blackhawk seems to be ubiquitious with the US military these days; a quick google shows a number of people make a 1:48 diecast one.

My Father-in-law hangs out at the local airfield (ex-pilot and mines boilermaker).
There are several Piper cubs as well as more than a few Cessnas parked in the hangars there.

There are even Tiger Moths at this airstrip.

No need to be a button counter on this one Dave, go for what you can find. My troops have two UH-1 Huey Hog & a Hughes 5000 copter.

Blackhawks are nice (and obvious choice) but I can't find them less than £35 ($55ish dollars) so compared to £8.99 on special for the revell huey kits, you do the math ;).

Unless you have a lot of space, this can only ever really be a small civilian strip to look 'right' so light aircraft as you say will look fine.

This might help:

If you can find a cheap 1/48 scale Cessna kit you're very lucky. IIRc Testors did one. They also do a Learjet in the same scale. I've been eyeing one off as a suitable piece of transportation for a Colombian drug lord. Has to be a Lear really.

Darkoath - sorry if you already know this line of diecasts, but it's the one I use for my helis:

Of course that NewRay stuff was much easier to find here in Europe one year ago than now :\

And the Fast Lane line from Toys R'Us re-uses some of the same helis plus adds some new ones:

The "TV Station" heli is great:

It's a pity they don't sell it here in Europe :\
