Is this worth 12 bucks?
« on: September 14, 2007, 06:46:43 PM »
I found a diecast airplane bank today at a local fleamarket that looked somewhat useful for a pulp era game.  I think it had some kind of gas company logo on it and it looked just like this one.

I'm not sure if it's close enough to scale for the 12 bucks it would cost me.  That's not much compaired to the prices I've seen for these but if it's too small I may not bother.  It looks a bit underscale to me but I'm not super picky as long as it's reasonable for 28mm figs.  What do you think?

Ask yourself the following:

1. Am I likely to use this in a game more than twice?
2. How much would I pay for an unassembled resin kit of the same thing?
3. Have I paid my gas and electric bills for the month?

And since it was a flea market, I'd offer $5 for it and pay up to $10. Underscale is slightly better than overscale, particularly for something like this, which is more a bit of scenery in most mini games.

I can afford the 12 bucks right now but I could use that money on minis if it's way out of scale.  Aparantly it's a Lockheed Vega or at least that's what the e-bay ones are trying to claim.  I'm not sure how big those are suppose to be in 1/48th scale.  It looks close to big enough for a small passanger plane and I think it is "close" enough for a game prop personally.  I suppose I could ebay it if I decide it's too small.

Oh and I think I should have said consignment shop.  It's a big store with a bunch of booths people rent out then the owner of the building sells things and takes a cut not a roadside "Flea market" where you can haggle with various sellers.  I don't think what we call flea markets is exactly the same as what you call a flea market and in fact I think the term is applied differently in different parts of the U.S. as well.

Actually looking the Vega up it's a smaller plane than I thought so this one may be ok.

really these things are higher on E-bay and I would have to pay shipping.  From the mesurements it looks a bit larger than 1/48th it might be 1/43 which it not gawd awful so I was wrong thinking it was small.  It's way too tall though but it's only off by a few feet in length and wingspan to 1/48th.  I doubt it's exact scale to anything so I can only hope to get "close".

Actually I already did before the Professor's warning.     It's a bit larger than 1/48th scale for the most part but the landing gear struts are to tall for the plane.  Still it makes it easier to position figures under the wings and such so that's not all bad.  I'll post some pics of it tomorrow or something with some figures around it.

This is the reason I carry around a miniature in my wallet for just these situations. I've had a few odd looks at different shops as I pulll out a little piece of lead to stand it alongside the item to see if it would pass. The looks get a little stranger when I unconsciously mutter the pro's and con's outload to myself.

Fortunately I game in 15mm which means carrying a miniature in my wallet isn't a big issue. I could imagine 28mm would probably be a bit harder.

 Perhaps, as Lead Adventurers, we should all be wearing a favorite figure on a chain about our necks, much the way some Christians wear a cross. Since we now have Pete writing out scripture derived from Grimm on the Open Forum, perhaps this should be a commandment.

I get odd enough looks wearing my Viking bling around here.  I can't imagine what kind of looks I'd get with a mini hung around my neck.   :o
