I love the Tartan trousers. I have never been brave enough to try stripes or tartan. Is there any particular technique to it?

I used this mini for test a tecnic to make tartan, is the first time that i paint this kind of fabric.
I've :
painted the basecoat wiht dark flesh
painted the vertical lines with a sand color
painted the horizontal lines with a sand color
highlighted the square with red color (two or more hand)
highlighted the lines with sand color + 1/3 white
