Advice on how to use Silfor Grass Tufts
« on: January 29, 2011, 09:00:43 PM »
I am wanting to up my game with doing very detailed bases...  so I purchased several sizes and colors of Silfor
grass tufts but am not quite sure how to use them.

Do I just cut the tuft i wish to use and stick in down on the base?  The tuft base is a clear stickly plastic.  Do I then carefully cover this clear sticky plastic with other basing material like gravel and static grass or flocking?

I wish these came with some kind of instructions on how to use them...

Anyway thanks for any advice... and don't worry about being too basic... I need a Silfor Tufts for Dummies guide! lol

Strangely enough I already know how to use the non based type tufts and or making my own tufts from rope from my railroad modelling days...

You are not alone, I have been thinking about making the leap to Silflor, but am totally in the dark as to how to deploy them. Where is Capt. Blood when you need him? So I also eagerly await guidance, apologies for hitchiking onto your thread.

Just peel the tuft you wish to use from the sheet and attach it to the base in the desired spot. There will be some sticky carried along with the tuft which will hold of sorts but I always use a spot of glue with mine to make sure they stay in place. PVA is good as it dries clear if you can wait for it to dry or superglue if you are careful and cannot :) Thats it.

You can drybrush the tufts to add variation as well.

You can also use them as beauty spots. I've seen a number of elderly ladies who seem to have used Silfor tufts for just this purpose.

I use and recommend them for filling in the blank patches on my formerly luxuriant beard.

I understand they are also useful in basing and have employed them in this regard for several years.

I always put a dab of superglue under each tuft. They might stick on static model railway layouts with their little bed of gum, but it's not durable enough for war-games handling.

As the good captain says, but apply them last after you have textured and painted the base.

Same here. A deb of superglue does the trick.

I use PVA/white glue but yeah, as the others have said, just stick it on at the end.

Should one apply tufts to the base before or after varnish?
