QF 2.95 inch Mountain Gun?
« on: February 05, 2011, 02:33:29 PM »
Does anybody make a 28mm Vickers QF 2.95 inch Mountain Gun? Kind of a long shot, I guess, but no harm in asking.

If the story is correct then this is the weapon that fired Britain's first artillery round of the Great War, so it deserves a model, I reckon. It was the signature support weapon of the WAFF, and I wants one!  :)

Yes, Old Glory make one (or something extremely similar - I have one, anyway). I can't quite remember, but I *think* it's this: http://www.oldgloryuk.com/disp_item.php?c=310&oc=3679

No picture, so I'm afraid I can't be sure.
I told you so. You damned fools.

Cool. Thanks. I guess the "2.55 inch" is a typo on the UK site, as Old Glory USA list HCC-03 as 2.95 inch.

The only thing that bothers me is "on naval carriage." A mountain gun on a naval carriage doesn't really make any sense. Does the carriage look like the ones in the pictures I posted?

It does. All of their guns are listed as 'on naval carriage', not sure why. The gun I have is almost exactly the same height as my Perry miniatures screw-gun, if that's any help. I’m sorry I can’t provide a picture, as I don’t at the moment have the figure to hand.

Yes, that does help, as I have the Perry screw gun, too. Need to rustle up some figures that look a good size with it, and then get the Greenstuff out to make them look like WAFF.

Thanks a whole lot, you've been a terrific help. I'll be putting an order in pronto.

Anytime!

And if it turns out I've remembered incorrectly and you end up with a naval howitzer on a vast gun carriage, I'd like to say now that it was not my fault, but yours for believing me.  ::)

Aren't the OG guns from what was formerly the Houston's Guns range? IIRC most were on naval pedestal mount? The OG US site doesn't mention naval carriage though.  Even so you'll save some work on the gun itself.

Incidentally, naval carriage does have historical resonance. Quite a few standard pieces, including mountain guns received 'naval pattern carriages'. These are the sort of things they have at the Royal Tournament. You know the thing matelots manhandling guns over an obstacle course, with much use of block and tackle and the like. Capital ships and cruisers would generally have one or two for landing parties. The last landing piece in service IIRC was the QF 3.7" Mountain Howitzer but that one seems to have a ordnance pattern carriage.. Here are some photos of HMS Hood's 3.7" howitzers doing a range shoot in the 1930s.

I think the only other place the 2.95"  saw service was in the Philippines. I had a look at the only other crowd who do a Philippine Insurrection range, Monday Knight but no joy there. Good luck. Let us know aboput the OG version. I could do with one of those myself.

Ah, I see. I took "naval carriage" at face value and assumed it meant some kind of set-up for firing it from a ship (the phrase conjures up images of wooden carriages with tiny wheels from the age of sail, though that seems anachronistic for this era). I didn't know about these naval pattern carriages. Seems odd though. Mountain guns are by design meant to be taken apart and manhandled. Why would the Navy want their own special (and different) version that does the same?

We'll it's only £2.50.  We'll find out soon enough if it's what we're all figuring it is. I'll let you know.

A mountain gun on a naval carriage doesn't really make any sense.
To be fired on mountain lakes ?  ::)
Ask the Swiss Navy ?  :D

Out of bloody stock. They conveniently neglected to say if they're going to be in stock any time soon, or if they're going to send it when they are. But they haven't refunded me for it so they'd bloody better.

Thanks, Tim (and S.J.). I'll keep that in mind as a last resort. But as I have actually paid them for it, I'm kind of hoping that Old Glory will send me one.  :)
