The Lost City of Z isn't too bad. It might be a bit late for what you're after.

I'd be keen on seeing what other people dredge up though :)

And Kipling wrote several stories. These are all classics.

Just got this the other day...

Based on true events, but it is a novel. Haven't read it yet, but have heard good things about it.

I'd second the Rider Haggard Quatermain stories (I think "Maiwa's Revenge" is my favourite, though it is only a short story/novella?). Some of them enter slightly fantastical territory with lost cities and the like, but still lots of fun. I had a thread going a while back where I discussed a few of them:

There are several free downloadable Quartermain books as well as some free audiobooks at archive.org.

The Librivox recordings are all done by volunteers, so the quality definitely varies.

"Heart of darkness" by Joseph Conrad should fit somewhat, as should "Prester John" by John Buchan.  :)
Best regards

This book is not a novel but I would think 'The River War' by Sir Winston Churchill has to be recommended reading.

From Amazon.com:
Churchill wrote this account of the campaign at Omdurman in Arabia in 1899 when he was still soldiering for the queen. It was his first major historical work and is still considered one of his most riveting.

Cheers,
Damien

In Limbo: The story of Stanley's rear column by Tony Gould.

The real thing, heh heh. An evil story.

There is a play called The Rear Column based on it.
It requires less mental effort to condemn than to think - Emma Goldman

The actual story of Livingstone and Stanley is like a boys-own story in itself. Try "Into Africa" by Martin Dugard. It's very well written and reads like a novel. Also it is very well researched and has plenty of background info on the make up of expeditions, the characters of the main players etc, which is very useful in a gaming context.

There's a recent thread on Fred Burnaby. Try reading his Ride to Khiva. Jolly exciting and he isn't getting himself killed in Africa.
