Some Otherworld Orcs
« on: 10 February 2011, 06:33:04 AM »
Getting ready to go to market and get some roast beast. I went for a burnt sienna / sepia mix for the skin instead of green.

I think you have done a good job.  I really like that they seem very natural. I think this looks better then a GW green skin.
Why aim for gold if you can get lead?

If its a retro orc, its gotta be brown!

Lovely stuff- are you doing a whole dungeon worth?

Actually this is pretty much what orcs looked like before GW decided on bright green with theirs. You will find ones like this in the oldest final fantasy computer games for instance.

Thanks folks!

Red-brown is the color I always learned for orcs for 1st Ed. D&D. The green skin thing was always a bit strange to me. These otherworld figs are so retro I had to go back to the old style colors. I've seen them in green and they look good too though.

I also got some gnolls and skeletons and an owlbear.

The painting style for these is very glaze heavy, with the priming/underpainting being a key. They were primed with black first, then sprayed from the top with a desert yellow primer from the Army Painter, then given a final top spray (zentih) with white primer. Then the colors were added using mixtures of inks (Liquitex), GW washes, matte varnish (liquitex), and some opaque paints to finish details off. The bronze was just a base layer of bronze, then a glaze of turquoise ink mixed with burnt umber ink and matte varnish. There were some edge highlights with gold at the end to finish it off but I wanted the metal to have some green instead of being rusty as that would just match the skin.

Here is one more set of 3. I got the box of 9 orcs.

Top stuff there antimatter! I find brownish orcs more cricket than greenskins - but I'm conflicted about how to paint my own old Citadel orcs. Being GW, green is canon so question really is - stick to canon or just do what I like?

Do what you like. Sod canon. Green Orcs look stupid.

When I used to play 40K I painted about half of my Space Orks with human-type skin tones, just as an experiment. They looked much cooler than the ones I painted green.

Green is okay, but I always thought a dark reddish fleshtone looked more sinister. You can always use different colors on different areas of the skin also, but green skin always ends up either having pink areas or blue areas, both of which look more silly than scary. I want scary orcs. Here is a goblin I did about 6 years ago with all sorts of shades on the skin.

 :o

I've looked at these on the Otherworld site and there is a store nearby that sells them. They seemed really cool but was never sure about them.

But these are really well done, as some of the other posters said earlier they do look very natural, very real.

As for colours, well, I really don't mind -what- colours my orcs are in, Green, Red, Dark Orange, Brown, doesn't matter, given there seem to be very many variations of orcs I like to have a variation of colour. Adds a certain exotic, unique element to the horde of rampaging monsters!

Put it simply like this, not all humans are white skinned, so why should other races be?  lol

BEAUTIFULLY WELL DONE! The Pig Faced Orcs bring back fond memories of my early adventures with TSR's D&D & Mini Figs Orcs...minis have come a LONG WAYS. I just started going back to red browns for my Goblins. The green thing I understand originally started with Dave Andrew's group when they were doing demo games for a then unknown G.W..

I don't like pig snouted orcs, but the paint job is really very good. I agree with the coments about green skins, though I have gotten used to it by now. In LotR however, I stick to a deep brown/black or bluish tone to the skin. Looks so much cooler and more sinister.

Otherworld miniatures are just about the best minis I know these days. Even if I don't care for the pig faces the miniatures themselves are really top notch quality.

Yeah, I know but even if we don't play any GW rule sets (except Blood Bowl) we play in the Old World of the 80s. The concensus is that orcs are greenskins. I find it odd to not paint my greenskins green. =)

Green Orcs look stupid.
That's another problem there... I don't think so, I think green rocks. Brown rocks a bit more, but is also uncharted ground. Harumph... new stuff. Bah. ;)

I'm not doing the 90s Goblin Green orcs though... I think a dark green base coat, highlighted with lighter shades with a slight tint of brown or mustard would work fine. Brown wash on that and the orcses ought to be all right.

Great work there - I had forgot/didn't know that old skool D&D Orcs were brown!

I would have read monster section in the old red Basic rulebook again before painting the ones I bought at the begining of the year!

Oh who am I kidding? I would have been lazy and looked at the images on the Otherworld site and gone green!

Earthy browns are much cooler and the way to go.
