Victorian Sewer Outflow
« on: February 14, 2011, 11:49:22 AM »
Inspired by gamer Mac's excellent 'board edge' terrain (see here) I decided to try my hand at something similar.  I'm currently starting a 'Gothic Horror' project set in and around Victorian London and have decided that part of my terrain will represent a dilapidated industrial area.  With that in mind I decided that a sewage outflow might add a bit of appropriate 'flavour'.  Here's an early WIP shot (apologies for the poor quality. I'm going to get a proper lamp and day light bulb shortly).  The 'box' will be clad in Slaters Brick Grey Embossed Plastikard (as will the toilet tube 'interior) and other detailing will be added (a metal ladder made from stables up one side and a manhole cover on the 'roof').  Any thoughts/ideas would be much appreciated.

Good idea!  :)

Are you going to put anything over the entrance to the tunnel such as bars or a gate?
Don't!

Cheers.  I was thinking of using cocktail sticks or heavy wire for bars across the entrance, but with a a few bent and broken as if something monstrous has forced its way out!  Think the giant rat from The Talons of Weng-Chiang Doctor Who episode (actually, Li H'sen Chang and his Tong of the Black Scorpion are going to be just one of a number of competing criminal groups in my game).  I have to say your own excellent terrain work has been a great source of inspiration to me!  Hopefully the Plastikard will arrive tomorrow and I can 'get crackin' with the knackin'', as it were.

Very kind words indeed, thank you. The great thing about this forum is the cycle of inspiration. I've inspired you now you've inspired me to build a sewage outlet (that's after I've copied gamer Mac's table edge piece).

Latest update!  Just need to wait for the filler to dry then add sand texture and I can start spraying and painting (masking tape is for the undercoating phase - the brick detail is rather fine and I don't want to obscure it with too many coats of paint).  The grey streaks are the final few splutters from my ancient can of Roughcoat, intended to texture the cardboard cornerstones.  I finished the job with watered-down PVA and sand.  Once it's all been painted I can add the sewage itself (Vallejo Still Water coloured with suitably dun hues) and add additional details!  Oh yes, there's brick-work in the interior 'pipe' too!

And would these be 'orderable' directly from you?  They look absolutely fantastic by the way!

Okay, latest progress report.  Fouled up the bricks a bit with some heavy-handed dry-brushing, but I think they turned out okay in the end.  As I said previously I do find the detail on some Slaters Plastikard products to be rather too fine.  Perhaps future endeavours will involve a different method of reproducing brick-work (I know there's loads exhorted on this very site that I fancy a go at).  Anyway, just need to DB the earth and then add the sewage and that's the model bascially finished aside some final detailing...

Yep it looks suitably grimy and grubby, marvellous stuff.

It looks good Funghy and dont worry about the brickwork its worked out just fine.
Slaters can be bit fine as you say and its been a bit hit and miss for me lately so I've gone back to Finecast, bit more pricey but does the job.
