1:15 ratios Cavalry feedback required

Recently on a post where I finally came to a conclusion about the basing and figure ratios I would use for my own solo gaming, Jimbo asked the question:

"How do you intend to apply this for Cavalry?"

"It would be the same idea", I thought to myself.

But then last night I was laying awake in bed and thinking, "WOULD it be the same?"

So this morning I did some research and took some pics. My conclusion is neither here nor there and so I require some feedback from you the readers.

Not a Napoleonics Grog in you face type... however, traditionally I believe folks use the 1000 men per battalion and 500 horses per regiment convention.

If your battalion of 1000 men is 48 figures that would translate into a cavalry regiment of 24 figures or 6 per squadron.

Why not double the width rather than depth. So each squadron is in one rank, 8 figures wide?

This would look more 'historical' to my mind.

I have a similar view on infantry.  They should all be much wider then the traditional two figure deep companies that you usually see.

At 1/300 scale the widths are all historically accurate. Its the footprint of the base that matters not necessarily the number of minis on that base. At the moment all the widths are historical and I always use paper strengths so French Infantry battalions are all 6 x companies of 120 and Cavalry regiments are 4 x squadrons of 120. When I replay a historical fight, I remove bases to get down to actual strengths on the day, anywhere from 300 to 600 for Waterloo for example.

Think that will solve your problem and the greater number of horsemen per base will look quite nice.

Gone with double width but increasing the number of figs per stand from 2 to 3. So each squadron will be 2 x stands of 3 being 1:20 ratio.
