Tips for sculpting hands

Does anyone have any tips fir sculpting hands as I have a couple of figures to convert and I need to replace the hand holding the weapons with an open & pointing hand.

Not really but I would say use a lot less putty than you initially think - about half as much in my case. ;D

I believe that some sculptors actually make a tiny wire armature for the hand, depending on the pose you want for it. Even if you don't use an armature for all five fingers, you probably do want some wire support for a pointing index finger or some such.
