trench raiding rules
« on: 20 May 2011, 07:55:31 AM »
Does anyone know of a good rule set for small trench raids?
I already use 'Price of Glory' for games using one platoon (probably could also use more than one platoon if I wanted to), but I don't think it would would work that well for smallscale trench raiding...  Ideally I am looking for rules that are easily adapted for different forces and have individual men being able to act independently.  Anybody got any suggestions?

Don Featherstone "Skirmish Wargames" had a chapter on trench raiding.
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

There's the game Trench Raiding in Wargames Illustrated #235 by Dave Andrews. It included several top down images of a trench system to be used as board pieces.

I think whatever you use you need to have some sort of mechanism for 'blinds'..that is not quite knowing where your opponent is (or he you) until you engage. Most raids were carried out at night on lightly held forward trenches or observation posts. Otherwise it just turns into a regular attack.

Two Fat Lardies did a supplement in one of their specials for Trench raiding to go with their Mud and Blood Rules.

There is a AAR on it being used for a SCW trench raid game in the interwar section.

It has a system for alocating missions, and limited intelligence on what is in the trench you are attacking.

Tabletop Games had a ruleset called 'Trench', how  original!
It had rules for large battles but also included a trench raid set as well, along with ideas on making a trench board. You had to plot star shells, artillery etc so you could end up bringing down a barrage or illuminating your own troops.
If you fancy them and cannot get hold of a set then I can try to dig mine out as I have not used them for years.

I like a sound of 'Trench'.  After a quick look to see if I could get these rules anywhere however, I cannot find a copy.  If it is not too much trouble for you Londoncopper,  would you be so kind as to 'dig out' your rulebook.
