With the advent of Outpost Wargames Service Romanian greens, I looked around at what I could use as artillery crew until such time as there is a dedicated one. With a handy paint job Outpost`s Russian artillery crew can be used as long as one is not a purist..the uniform can be painted up to resemble a Romanian crew of this period although the equipment is different but as long as one can accept the differences then they provide a good basis.
I would be interested to hear from anyone with any better ideas.
As soon as my offering is painted I will post a pic;
Uniform of a gunner of the 4th Artillery Regiment -1877
The artillery uniforms carried during the Independence War of 1877-1878 had been introduced in 1873. They were composed of the following items:
•Kepi made in dark-blue cloth, with a black bottom band, piped red. It had in front a red wool braid over a tricolour cockade, with prince Carol's cipher below. The kepi had a black square visor, red false chinstrap and was adorned on the top by a red wool pompon. NB..Pic seems to show Kepi a greyish colour but it was in fact dark blue as stated earlier.
•Tunic made in brown cloth, with red piping, double breasted, with two rows of 7 visible brass buttons each. The collar, cuffs and shoulder boards were in black cloth, piped red. On the rear, the tunic had two false pocket flaps, fastened with 3 brass buttons each. The collar was decorated with red cloth flamed grenades and the shoulder boards were bearing the number of the regiment, "4", in red cloth;
•Breeches in gray cloth with red piping;
•Black leather jack boots;
•Black leather waist belt with brass buckle with two black ammo pouches
•Natural leather haversack and strap. please use the same colour as the revolver holster in the pic
•Sapper Sword – Brass hilt, black scabbard with brass fittings
