More able seamen

Finished painting the Black Scorpion Miniatures blister of Able Seamen this weekend. Though bad matt varnish struck again resulting in a bit of nerd rage on my part as the models ended up more shiny after than before. It would almost be worth investing in a idiot proof brush on matt varnish.

And I'm not talking Vallejo because I've tried it and it does not work towards a 100% matt finish.

Galland is the customer so he should know. If the big bald guy is not part of Black Scorpion range it would make sense as the style of his sculpt was different from the others. I only assumed that he was an early sculpt before the range was fleshed out.

I assume from your previous post you are unable to get or find Testors Dull-cote?

That is correct, does not seem to exist in Sweden. I read on a Swedish forum that Testors Dullcote could cause genetic disorders and was stopped in EU. They then changed the formula but it is still impossible to find or import to Sweden it would seem. I can't even order it from UK as it won't allow shipping to Sweden.

The only solution now is to try to find the brush on version of Testors, it would be nice to know how efficient that version of the matt varnish is and how it reacts with paints (don't want smudging for instance).

 The bald pirate is one of five that Four A miniatures sells.They were sculpted by Jim Bowen.They have been pictured in an old issue of Wargames Illustrated with more of Jim's painted miniatures.

The miniatures are indeed the cool pirates that Jim Bowen sculpted. I got my self two sets and are getting some of them painted. I will save a few until next project, and decide what to do with them then.

Model Master makes a brush on clear matte labeled "Acryl."  It is not as flat as Testors Dullcoate (which I use), but does a good job for the most part.  I use it as a wash, actually.  I mix in some flat black and paint it on -- no mixing up a new batch of wash each time.  I take a paint brush and keep adding black to the clear flat bottle until it gives the result I want.

Nice figures, by the way!  I don't notice any glossy sheen in the pics!

I have used it when I ran out of Dull-Cote and it works.  I have miniatures that I dulled with this that are still looking good on my shelf after 5 years.  Doesn't muss the paint either.  It is designed for fixing pastel or crayon drawings.

Btw, is the can 12 3/4 Oz or  "Size 12" 3/4 oz ? Trying to figure out if it is a huge can or a small one like the Tamiya Flat Clear "TS-80" 3oz I use.
