Personally, I like to clip or cut the base away from around the figure's feet (leaving the figure looking like it is wearing platform shoes). Then I like to carefully trim away the area on the bottom of the feet until the figure stands correctly on the base and I like to insert pins into the model's heels to securely anchor it to the new base.

A decent razor saw. Just replaced mine and wondered why I hadn't a long time ago....cut's like a hot knife through butter. Mindful of fingers though as it's a fiddly business! Also use the clipping method as well.

A decent razor saw...

I use this method, then insert metal pins for glueing.

And I use this method too.   ::)

I find both methods work well, so it's just down to which is closer to hand.  The razor saw or the clippers.   :)

i'll do some clipping 'round the feet as well, some platform-shoe-scraping after that, too.
But mind, that some legs are a little bit too thin above the feet, they often will get one twitch too much from the first "cut" between the legs (the seperating somehow gives too much force to the tin-structure) ... so, do it swift, but not brutal - so to speak!
