15mm stonewalls
« on: 20 July 2011, 01:15:30 PM »
Inspired by Dolmot's walls I decided to do a few for my gaming board (which I don't have yet  ::)). I used a strip of 1mm plasticard as a base and Javis small cork boulders (they went through a strict selection process!) and ofc some PVA glue.

I just started piling them up, bigger rocks first and tried to put the smaller in the top level and in to the caps. The picture with the minis has been taken little diagonally (if thats the right word..) so it looks like the figs are too big but in reality the walls are to the waste level of the figs.

Theres 4 in total and their sizes vary a little. I might make moulds of those if the cork material doesn't get ruined?
Also if I don't make moulds but just decide to use those I need to paint them up. I will probably end up painting them something like these:

Have to say that I used around 1,5 - 2 hours to build one  lol. It's not easy to find suitable sized cork boulders from the packs... then use squeezers to pick them up, dip into the glue and fix into the wanted spot. That's slow work !

cheers

well, that's a nice start. I like the savage looks of this kind of fortification, but you have to consider 2 things:

1 - the walls are thin, otherwise they are useless because are easy to climb! So try to put more vertically the rocks!

2 - the rocks in that state are fulfilled of wheed and other organic stuff, so you will have to make a lot of experiments with powder and pigments to give the aged look.
That's why i always avoided them, even if it should be a really nice addon for a fantasy (or historical) skirmish game!

Good points!

I didn't even think about those things really, just built :). The walls I have seen in pictures are quite thin but I know what you mean, if the enemy gets close the walls should be deeper to avoid them getting too close easy. But, I have never seen that kind of walls really. Wooden fences etc. are very thin also and wouldn't give much protection when the enemy is in close quarters.

Those were not painted :) If I decide not to make molds I will then paint them up. I thought of doing the aging the "Dolmot" style with pva + paint + water mix and add scatter after that. Then also some washes.
