Samurai skirmish games...
« on: 27 July 2011, 12:35:28 AM »
Any suggestions?

I have Kashindan, not played it yet, but always looking to see what others have.

My friend Scott adapted GW's Lord of the Rings rules for Samurai gaming. I never played it myself, but I gather they worked well.

I think they are the ones available from Wargames illustrated's website. There are some other samurai LOTR variants in the LOTR Variants Yahoo group too.

How big a skirmish do you want?
Legends of the Rising Sun(lotr) is nice and, as mentioned, available on the WI site still. Ganesha games' system can also be utilised well for up to 15 figs or so. We've used it atthe club for Samurai games and thought it worked well.
Heck even WAB can be used for skirmish with the tweaks suggested in their border skirmish ammendments. Might have been in 1.5?

There's a fan supplement for SBH on the SBH Yahoo group called Song of Ninja & Katana, and there's been talk of an official version.

Also a few skirmish sets on the Free Wargames Rules site

I purchased the 'Bushi no Yume' rules as soon as they became available & think they're superb.
...and what fresh new hell is this?

I can recommend the Legends of the Rising Sun mod in Wargames Illustrated as a lot of fun.  I had the good fortune to play in some early playtest games of it hosted by Aaron Loomis, who authored the article for WI.  If you're already familiar with and enjoy the LOTR mechanics you'll probably like it.

Here are some pictures/battle report of the first game he ran, which was a smaller scale battle featuring multiple competing "gangs".

Here are pictures from another game which was a slightly larger skirmish battle featuring samurai forces attacking Ikko-ikki monks in their fortress-monastery.

There's a time for joking around and a time to be serious; this is not one of them.

Having played LotHS and LotOW, I believe this will be the rules set I will use, and wow, the Perry miniatures are superb!

I've also got to recommend 'Bushi no Yume' - a very well-written set of rules that seems fairly straight forward, yet has oodles of character and research behind it.
