Sci Fi Romans
« on: 04 August 2011, 04:03:16 AM »
Hello all!  I have been out working in the boonies for the last couple weeks which leaves me with plenty of time to think up crazy ideas like this.  I have been thinking of making sci fi roman legionaries.  They would be based off of 1st century Romans I believe (not sure about this...  I am not a roman expert.)  I was inspired when I saw "The Eagle".  Basically what I am looking for is easily converted Romans with Lorica Segmenta, square shields and unplumed helmets.

My plan is to sculpt BDUs and boots onto them, sculpt full-face visors onto the helmets (ala halo) add rifles, pig iron backpacks, MOLLE webbing on the armour, ammo pouches etc.

The armor will be OD colored.  The idea being that it is similar to an Interceptor vest with removable plates, just patterned after lorica segmenta.

So basically I just need a starting point.  I am looking for romans that will look good next to Pig Iron, Copplestone or GW minis.

Any help is appreciated!  Thanks!

Hi,

Would these be of any help? They are spot on sci-fi legionnaires.
Also I've used these for my conversion projects but these are a little small.. more 25mm than 28mm. I converted them quite alot (including legs, arms) so they fitted nicely with other minis.

in fact.. I have one full box of those that I don't really need ;)

But just a few thoughts.

You might want to look at this for background fluff:

I've always loved this idea.

Have you ever seen these:

Might save you a lot of conversion time.

Cheers,

Do you know if the riding beasts are scalable with 40k imperial guard?

Quick and easy plastic conversion jobs, I reckon: mix sprues from Warlord Romans and GW Necrons you're laughing...

As people have already linked to the UW Junkers I won't.  :D

There was a range a figures from Apocalypse Miniatures - Atlantis Imperium more Sci-Fi Greek than Roman but it may give you a few ideas.

Here's the commend squad - it seems I can't post the picture from the Wayback machine.  :?

I always regret not picking these up, so I'll be interested in how your project turns out.

Those (Apocalypse) are wonderfully tacky. Would have loved to own some - they could have been used in SO many different futuristic settings - especially because the weaponry is not 'over-the-top'.

For Romans, I'd also go with Junkers - maybe preferably the old Void ones, but the idea of mixing 'real' Romans with Necrons or other minis also seem a way to go

I looked at the urban mammoth miniatures already and while they are great looking minis, I am looking for something that will fit in with my copplestone future wars minis.

Here is part of my inspiration:

(By the way, while this is a good book, it has absolutely nothing to do with science fiction romans.)

I am thinking of using the warlord romans as a start.

I will use hasslefree guns:

and pig iron backpacks and pouches:

I'm fairly sure the Pig Iron packs and CAD guns from Hasslefree will be too large for Warlords Romans.  The regular Hasslefree weapons should be OK, but the CAD guns are larger.

If you're looking for packs and such, the Warzone plastic Bauhaus have packs small enough for the Romans and the guns might fit, too.  The Warzone plastic Imperials have little holsters and things on their packs that could be cut off and added to the Romans.  The Imperial packs themselves are probably too large, though.  If you don't have a use for the left overs, I'm sure they could easily be sold or traded off.
