First Lawmen from Foundry
« on: 16 August 2011, 12:52:04 AM »
Hello!

I have been painting sci fi and zombies for aeons but today I got my first Foundry lawmen!
Just ten including 2 mounted to start off but it was inspired by a saturday, too hungover to paint zombies, watching The Big Country.
So.
I also purchased LotOW and I wated to ask,
1. Thoughts on the rules? I was hoping for a role play style with good character advancement. Any pointers?
2. Nicest sculpts/ranges that you know of.

Like I say. I'm a stranger in these here parts.

Painting first guy tonight in a rush so I will get a pic up tomorrow for criticism but I should, and intend to paint most of 'em slowly.
Quality over quantity.
Except for the first one.....
(new toy syndrome)

Oh yeah. Also, how in tarnation are you guys doing desert bases, I have 2000 grassy based guard and WW2 but zilch on the desert theme.
Bit lost for where to start. Have sanded him on a 25mm and black undercoated. Then I kinda' went mmmmmmmm......

Last question. Are the zombie cowboys nice sculpts (foundry) and, are there any rules for them?
I can't help myself.
Brains anyone?

Hi jp762,

Welcome to the "Big Country", Sah ...

Foundry Zombies - nice - I painted mine in an afternoon along with some Foundry "cowboy ghosts" (some ordinary minis dry brushed white). As far as rules I don't know of any for LoTOW, but Jet on this forum has posted his take on the "Goal System/ Chaos in Cairo" for zombies -

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=19702.msg239269#msg239269

Artizan and Brigade Miniatures do some really nice sculpts, Dixon Miniatures have some useful figures as well.

But also check out some of the earlier posts on this forum - there's a lot of good work here.

Hope this helps

Hey JP,

Foundry zombies are nice, do recommend. Ramirez gave a good list, I think Artizan has the all around best line but your mileage may vary. There are also some nice minis from Crusader & Reaper (though Reaper tend to run a little large, fit nice with Black Scorpion though). For desert bases I do the following:

- After primer coat with Calthan Brown
- Wash with brown ink
- Drybrush with Graveyard Earth then Bleached Bone

After that you can add static grass, etc...

Just my two-bits  :).
I am looking for the following Deadlands minis:  Shotgun Thug, Lost Soul, Cleaners, Railroad Workers & Feral Dead. If you have any of these minis, or if you are one, please send me a PM.

Crusader - Thanks Goon, I was having a bit of a mental block on that one  :)

The Crusader range is full of character.

My old west bases aren't stricktly desert, but a sort of generic desert/earth/mud color that I find works well with a lot of differing terrain.  It is as follows, in ever lighter layers:

1. Sand base
2. Prime Black
3. GW Graveyard Earth
4. Vallejo US Field Drab (or Vallejo US Tan Earth)
5. GW Commando Khaki

There's a time for joking around and a time to be serious; this is not one of them.

Am unsure about this one...

Too used to zombies I guess.
Ah well, they will improve over time.
Must finish his base though...

Criticise please. Painting in a vacuum here.

He is a little on the dark side... but that might be due to the photograph or lighting.  Seems like a nice start however! :D

Not quite as dark in real life but I see your point.
I do'nt tend to get too bright in general.
Thank you Darkoath!

A little static grass or some tuft will go a long way, the basic colors look good though.

Thats a good start, and certainly better than my mini-painting skills  :)

Yeap, a bit of static grass just to lift the colour.

As a side comment, I'm not a fan of slotta bases and prefer 25mm steel washers to give a low profile base and to allow me to store the minis on magnetic sheet.

Lokking forward to seeing some more.

Yes I think you fixed the eyes... losing the white space above and below the black pupil made the eyes look much more natural and removed the "pop" eyed look.  I think this second miniature is a nice improvement from
your first miniature also!  Good job! ;)
