The Fimir of Albion
« on: August 22, 2011, 12:04:49 PM »
Hey all. I've been working on this project for a while now, and I've threads running in a few forums as I want as much feedback as I can get. I've been lurking on here a while now, and figured it's time to dip my toe in the water, as it seems like this forum has many excellent (and bleedin' talented) gentlefolks upon it, and your august opinions would be much sought after.

So here goes. I'm building a fimir army for warhammer fantasy. The more elderly among you may remember the giant fimir from warhammer 3rd edition, sculpted by Nick Bibby. I've always fancied doing a full army based on a combination of Celtic mythology and aesthetic cues from places like Brian Froud's art and films like the Dark Crystal. I found the background I needed in Warpstone 25,http://www.warpstone.org/issues_pages/issue25.htm a WFRP fan magazine. Armed with this excellent material I began assembling the clan of fimir who rule the bogs of Western Albion.

There are very few fimir miniatures, those that do exist going for a king's ransom on ebay. I managed to purloin enough for my needs, and then came across the problem of human-scale fimir. There were two, one in metal scuplted by Jes Goodwin, and the more famous Heroquest plastic fimir. Not much. The new savage orcs had recently been released from Games Workshop, which seemed to be perfect for what I needed. Some sculpting, mould-making and casting later, and I was on my way.

Here are some shots of work so far. I aim for 2000pts initially, with another 500 later on.

Fimm musician

Fimm standard bearer

Fianna Fimm

Various fimir

Fimm warrior

Meargh

Crom Cruach

Fimm unit filler

They look great indeed.  My pal Pete Taylor did over a hundred of the original metal ones but they were stolen some years ago.

I did see at least one original head in my attic recently if it is of use but it looks like your skills at crafting them are better anyway.

And JB, if you really want zoats I can sort you out. Just wish I had some 40k ones left and then I could probably pay off my mortgage.

@Jimbibbly: No, I'm using the warriors of chaos list for 8th edition, I want to play these guys as much as possible. I might even get into an indy tournament or two.

@Svennn: Cheers. Over 100 fimir stolen? My God, that would break me. I think I actually saw a picture of this army at one time. I'll take that head, most certainly. Thanks very much!

I surely have. I've been chatting to Bruenor for a bit now, and I've a couple of dozen of these lads. I've six built for the first fimm unit. They're a bugger to put together, and require copious cleaning, pinning and green-stuffing, but they look a treat once done. I love the guy with the two-handed axe.

Cheers Mason, it helps the motivation greatly!

Didn't I hear that Fimmir were coming back for "Storm of Magic"??  ???
Anyway nice work, the savage orcs even work. I thought that they looked bad in the studio photos but I can see uses for them now :)

Thanks all. Crom is actually a cythonian from Rafm's Cthulhu line, but I thought he'd make a great addition to the fimir army. I have plans for a few giant worms and such. The bileworm from Gribbly miniatures is going to be a mount for a fimir mist mor.

I've been following your Fimir posts for some time and really enjoyed the sculpting/conversion work.

I regret that I don't think I'll be following your lead, but I still enjoy reading about your adventures.

I look forward to seeing more.

Cheers Dampf. I rather enjoy your blog too. Every time I look at it I think about cracking open the box containing my witchlands army and finally painting the buggers.
