28mm field tents

seeing as I'm getting increasingly wound up by my attempts to make a suitable tent, anyone know of anything that would work in 28mm as large tent suitable for field research stuff/archaelogical digs... army surplus kind of thing





I've seen the Verlinden arfield tent in 1/48 but suspect it's solid resin, and I need a workable interior for kit...

there's a Tamiya japanese army tent in 1/35 - anyone got any experience of how big would that be?

and yes I have the Renedra bell tents,    but need something big and accessible for the expedition's equipment...

The Tamiya kit is DAK German and pictures are available on-line of it with a 1/35th figure sitting next to it. See for example: http://www.model-making.eu/Tamiya-Tent-Set-p-1-113688.html which also incidentally shows the back of the box as well as the sprue (i.e.:contents).

So the tent is about twice the size you ideally need. However as it is a very small one man sort of tent or glorified poncho it should work. the biggest problem as I see it, though it has been years since I handled said model, is that it may appear too thick in terms of 28mm scaled cloth. Alternatively scratch build your own. Having said all of that I might consider getting some of these if they work given the time it takes to make your own. Please keep me posted.

I second the idea of scratchbuild your own.  Build the basic box structure from plastic (styrene) sheet,  then build up layers of green-stuff putty to simulate the folds of cloth.

Another option for a starter is to get a covered wagon , or possibly a truck with a canvas top, from Poundland or a charity shop and take the top off to use as the tent body.

Make your own is the best idea. There was an older thread about doing it. Can't find it though or remember who it was. I did post a picture of a tent I made using old bits of spru and some kitchen roll coated in PVA glue.
I will try and dig out a picture for you or find the tent and take a new one.

Found it is a dusty corner of my garrage. Excuse the dust.
It was made for 54 mm inquisitor stye games so it is big but it would be easy enough to build a 28 mm version.





The frame was just glued together old bits of spru.
A cover was made by gluing on kitchen roll and then painting it is a solution of PVA and water. While it was drying I shaped some of the folds to get the shape I wanted. Would be easy enough to make the roof seperate to allow for access to the inside.

I built a safari tent from scrap shirt fabric back in 2009, with a removable roof so it's more playable. It's held up remarkably well through a number of games and moves, especially given that it's mostly made of toothpicks, fabric and white glue!

I still haven't done the smaller tents to go along with it, but they're still on my "someday" list... I do need to do some smashed/flattened tents as well, for a scenario that begins with a dinosaur stampede through the exploration camp.

I have a number of army tents from those cheap plastic toy sets. Sometimes the come in bags or buckets with a bunch of army men plus tanks trees and other stuff. Bage start around $3 and buckets run about $10. I have gotten a lot of use of the trees & sandbag redoubts too.
