Palm tree size?
« on: September 17, 2011, 01:04:00 PM »
Hi, I'm currently thinking of making somesort of pacific atoll for my 1/72 marines to invade. Most of the forces are almost ready but now I'm looking for some palmtrees for the terrain building.

What would be the ideal size in cm for 1/72 pacific island style palm trees?

Thanks in advance.

See 1/72nd palm trees by Pegasus - http://pegasushobbies.net/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=palm+trees&osCsid=nkggfvp3c8pg3ll7shmeunlnh1&search.x=0&search.y=0

A friend bought a set of 1/48 once for a pirate island table.
He was rather disappointed of the quality. I believe it was the plastic appearance that ruined it for him.

Thanks for commenting I was going to buy a bulk load of cheap cake decoration trees as some look really good (even without a lick of paint).

But I was wondering on which size? 7, 9, 12, 15 cm? I will probably buy the 9 cm ones would these be tall enough for 1/72 or would I go for the 12 cm ones?

A 12cm palm in 1/72 scales up to 8.64 meters (approx. 28.35 feet).  There's no "one size" for Palm trees, but they can grow up to 40-50+ feet pretty easily.  I'd say go for the tallest size.

I'm guessing they're soft plastic so any paintjob probably wouldn't last that long.

With careful handling they last just fine. These are around 4 years old. Craftpaint over the plastic. Sprayed lightly with matte varnish IIRC.

That might also be a problem. Due to the size of the island he has to stack the halves when transporting, IIRC.
